only Spanish stations have real HiDef?? 1080p on Univision 33-1

OK, husband claims reason why Spanish lang channels on locals are mostly in HiDef is that Spanish speaking community is more likely to watch OTA than English speakers, thus more "demand" for OTA hidef, as English speakers are more likely to be using CATV. I disagree with that idea, but I can't come up with a good reason myself as to why.

There is not ONE single OTA English language channel I can find that broadcasts in 1080! The resolution on Spanish channels on Phoenix locals is phenomenal. Why are the English language channels just as great? Watching a "Nature" show on Spanish TV is really something.

I had done some antenna adjustments the other day, did a re-scan to check what I could get- and was blown away with the picture on the Spanish locals. Wow!! I had to just stare at the TV, not speaking Spanish but hypnotized by the amazing picture in front of me.

Why aren't English 1080 too!

33-1 Univision 1080p

35-1 Telefutura 1080!!

39-1 Telemundo 1080..

ok, 3 channels- other Spanish in either 720p or 480, of course. There isn't a single English station broadcasting in 1080. Highest I've seen is 720.

So, what gives??

According to my trusty Channel Master converter box the following (English) stations are 1080i: 3.1, 5.1 and 12.1.

I know both Fox (10) and ABC (15) broadcast in 720p because they feel their live sports programs air without any pixel lag in that resolution but I have never noticed any issues with CBS (5) or NBC (12).

Interesting you should mention this.....
Here in Northern Arizona things break down a bit differently.

KTVK Channel 3 translatos - 11 in Prescott, 25 Flagstaff and 38 Mingus all show 1080i
on the primary channel, 3.1 Very Good resolution

KNAZ Channel 2/KPNX Channel 12 via channels 22 Flag and translator on Mingus ch 6
all show 480 and have terrible resolution, worse than any other stations, including analogs.

KAZT Channel 7 shows 720p but the resolution is decidedly inferior to most of the other
HD channels.

KAET Channel 8 translator - 43 Prescott shows 720p and looks fine.

KSAZ Channel 10 translator - 39 Prescott shows 720p and looks fine

KNXV Channel 15 translators -47 Prescott, 24 Flagstaff and 44 Mingus all show
720p on the primary channel 15.1 Very good resolution....

KUTP Channel 45 only digital translator channel 28 Flagstaff shows 480 and
appears to get its signal from KUTP's translator atop Mingus channel 16.
Poor resolution, video noise, picture defects. etc.....

Here's where it gets interesting!!!! KASW Channel 61 translator atop Mingus
channel 34 shows 1080i AND it takes several seconds for both of my flatpanels
to bring up the station... It clearly has the best resolution of any station in
Northern Arizona....

Channel 13 KFPH shows 1080i on 13.1 and has good resolution but not any better
than any of the other stations using 1080i and it's not even close to KASW.....

Go figure!!!!!!!!

Landtuna I DID notice one daytime station on running 1080 (whatever station Anderson Cooper's soon to be canceled show is on) but not many programs broadcast using it, I see most of them using 720 most of the time. Seems the Spanish stations use it more, in my estimation. Their picture's a lot better- real crisp.

I don't know if stations switch between resolutions allowing for program content or not. I wouldn't think so since the vast majority of us can't tell the difference. Anything 720 and above is considered "high def" but obviously there is some PQ improvement between the two so it does matter.

I just got my new HDTV set up yesterday so I will be paying more attention to this type of thing. The numbers I posted yesterday are from a one-time look through my converter box which is attached to the computer. I have yet to invest in a HD video card.
