ONN Shut Down

Surprised not to see anything on this by now, but ONN is no more (as of August 31st). http://www.bizjournals.com/columbus/news/2012/07/25/dispatch-shutting-down-onn.html

Wonder if this means Time Warner will be getting into the business of 24 hour news/sports in Ohio. If it can work in places like upstate New York, can't imagine why such regionalized coverage wouldn't work in the Buckeye State. The ONN model was fundamentally flawed in that people in Cleveland don't care about news in Toledo or Cincinnati. The successful Time Warner Model is much more area-centric in nature.

If I'm not mistaken, TWC's upstate New York news channel is on channel 9 or 12. ONN was relegated to the 100s (locally, anyway) so a better channel number may help the cause as well, if they choose to go forward with it.

Absolutely correct observation regarding ONN's statewide approach and its flaws...

I think Time Warner can do a much better job statewide..It sort of felt like ONN was an arm of WBNS-TV as much as anything..They didnt have the resources to cover all of Ohio..Time Warner has a presence in all larger Ohio cities..Wouldnt be hard to set up bureaus around the state without relying on partnerships with TV stations..

On the Columbus board, a person mentioned that they've been running many infomercials over nights. How much money does your average 1/2 hour infomercial bring in to a station?

Another thought:Time Warner already has NEON (Northeast Ohio Network) on Channel 23 throughout Northeast Ohio..They could re-form that into a new news network, with some of their current programs (Les Levine, etc.) and just add some personnel and do a network that way..

ONN has Cristin Severance embedded at WEWS/5 in Cleveland. I hope she gets picked up by 5 or another station cross town.

That was the big strength of the network was the partnerships, but they could've done more with staff and programming.

UPDATE: Cristin Severance is now heading for KGTV in San Diego as a Consumer Investigative Reporter. The station is owned by Scripps, who of course owns WEWS.

Glad she found a new gig, but she'll be missed here in Cleveland. I've seen other ONN staffers picked up by WBNS-TV (CBS) in Columbus.
