Anyone happen to catch the opening of Channel 8’s noon newscast on Wednesday? What took place must have given the news director a coronary.

As the opening theme was played viewers saw Melanie Barnas talking, but couldn’t hear a thing because either her microphone wasn’t working, or someone forgot to turn the mic on. Seconds later the B roll shows the Nexstar Live truck and then a live shot of Ty Chandler standing outside thumbing through her notes, with her earpiece dangling from her coat. Take into account now that viewers had no idea what the story was about since they couldn’t hear Barnas’ introduction.

Suddenly you heard Chandler's videographer shout, “You’re on” and she looks up at the camera with an expression of a deer in front of a car’s headlights. It took a few seconds but Chander did regain her composure and finished her report about some town considering windmills as a source of energy.

Motto of the story: If you are doing a live shot, always make sure your earpiece is in your ear minutes before going on the air and that your studio mic is working.

Enjoying the internet with your morning coffee at the glorified secretarial job? Hmmm....
Perhaps you failed to notice that Channel 8 clearly beat Channel 13 in a number of demographics. Who really cares that they had a glitch (except you). Perhaps they should aspire to your near perfection and wind up in their own desk job. I'm especially thrilled to see their ratings go up because of their quality product and the fact they have not arrogantly rested on their laurels. Kudos to Mark, let's do racquetball again soon!

You know its really pathetic when you think of it that a person will log on here and verbally attack someone else while hiding under a false identity. I’ve always used my real name, and people know who I am because of my history on Rochester radio. And yes I do work for the government at a job that I’m very proud to have.

RadioAV8R started attacking me personally after I wrote something he/she disagreed with. Now if what I wrote bothered this individual, they have the right to respond, but in a professional manner. However this person showed their ignorance by making personal attacks.

So here is my response to RadioAV8R. You want to play racquetball, then bring it on! You can start by having the guts to tell me your real name and where you work. Or do you prefer to just hide behind your handle like a coward and continue spewing your verbal diarrhea?

Using your real name to trash outstanding people in this broadcast community doesn't make you rise to any higher of a moral standard. It just reinforces your character. Besides, you and I go way back. You already know who I am.

I haven't visited this board in a very long time, and once my over accumulated vacation time ends this weekend you will be rid of me. But for know, just remember that you will get the same respect from others that you give them. Don't throw trash unless you're willing to receive the same.

If you know who I am then you know that I would never intentionally hurt anyone’s feelings. The poem was just me kidding around, that’s all.

If anyone was offended then I apologize publicly. But, as I wrote before, a few individuals mentioned in the poem contacted me and they thought it was funny. I didn’t receive one negative comment, until yours. Now if your name was among those mentioned, and you feel hurt or slighted, then again I will apologize.

On the other hand you did attack me personally by mocking my job with the County and other things you said. As for checking your clock, go right ahead because I am home on vacation.

As for mentioning what happened at Channel 8 Wednesday, it was not to mock the people at 8, but just informing everyone what problems can arise by doing live remotes. I have the highest respect for the staff at Channel 8 and have always mentioned that on here.

Now if you will excuse me my five-month-old Granddaughter is here and I plan to spend some quality time with her.

To radioav8r: I am just an everyday, average JOE, who doesn't work in the broadcasting business, but I take an interest in the news and how it gets to me... I like to see the behind the scenes stuff, that the media doesn't report about their own industry...

As for Mark G's story about the slip up on the 8 Noon News, I personally like to see these mistakes every once in awhile, it's a reminder that the folks in front of the camera are human too and they do mess up every once in a awhile.

If it wasn't for Mark's retelling of the story, I would have never known that it happened. Thanks Mark for the retelling, and I saw it in no way as a slam to anyone, just keeping us informed of the human side of the broadcast business.

Ratings go up? One book does not a turnaround make. 8 was up a bit at 6 and 11 (with CBS numbers in prime, they have to be up at 11). Back in May, 8 blew chunks. One book doesn't mean much. Lets see how they do in the long run.
