Open letter to 96.9 programing director

So I sent this to the email address on 96.9 that said programing, I doubt it will get read. So i figured I'd post it in here as well. You guys think it was a little over top?

To whom it may concern,

No doubt you have got many of these emails today, perhaps not, but I figure it best to get it off my chest either way. Also I sincerelyapologize to whomever had to read this, I'm sure you had very little involvement in the many decisions that have brought us to this nexus today. Though possible you could forward this along to someone who did...

Your station sucks, your ratings are not down because of your hosts, they're down because of the fluff you force them to talk about. I find it hard to believe Jay would have ever been talking about sexual harassment if it wasn't on some "hot topics" list you force the talent* to touch upon daily. I certainly do appreciate your programing selections in the sense that they helped me in choosing which stores and products to not frequent and taking away at least one, once viable, listing option on Boston radio.

Not only as a program director, but as a human being you should be ashamed of what has become of a once great talk radio station. Maybe instead of "96.9 Boston Talks" you could add "about useless drivel that is as vanilla as possible, so as not to offend any one between the ages of 25 and 45" granted it's a little wordy but I think it captures the essence of what 96.9 has become.

*talent in this case should be taking in the looses of definition. Honestly, my dog leaves more talent in tightly coiled piles, in my back yard, then your fill in host Bower shows daily.

I doubt it will get read.

You are correct. But you didn't think it was going to be anyway.

So i figured I'd post it in here as well.

Actually, it was written to be posted here, evidently to impress us with your clever critique of their programming. Nobody would possibly write a useless missive such as yours with any expectation of it being taken seriously by the station itself.

You guys think it was a little over top?

It was supposed to be, wasn't it?

Regards,
TSB

so much decent talk radio out there. WMFO at 2-4 am, 3.885 during the morning/afternoon, 3.705 afternoon into evening, 3.843 overnights, 449.075 most of the time, 98.9 quite a bit. 99.7 and 101.3 mornings, http://newstalk.serverroom.us:8354/ which is carried on 105.3 or somewhere when theyre too lazy to run their own programming. and i'm just touching the tip of the iceberg here

Other then your assertion that my missive was produced for this board, I would have to say your critique is pretty close. I did write it for 96.9 program director and after I sent it I figured it more likely that 96.9 people that had some part in the crappy topics choices might see it here.

Yea, I thought it was a funny approach to vent my displeasure without coming across as just a belligerent jerk. And i thought some here might appreciate that. I mean for crying out loud people on here complain about everything that happens on Boston radio, I was just trying to interject some levity into my complaint.

yes, it was ment to be over the top, perhaps it's hard for you to infer that in my text.

I didn't expect any of my complaints directed at the decision makers in 96.9 be "taken serious"? It was more of a cathartic exersise for me, but You never know if they get enough of these complaints maybe Graham won't get fired the next time he runs afoul of some political action group.

Wow, that was one trail-Blazer-in' missive... Good job, buddy... ;)

Have you met that woman? I interviewed with her a few years ago and couldn't get out of there fast enough. The station going south on her watch is not surprising to me at all.

interesting!!! :)
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.
If Grace is smart, what she should do is here is my idea
Weekdays
Midnight-6am "Sporting News Radio"
6am-10am Jim and Marjory Eagon
10am-3pm Michael Graham
3pm-6pm Robert Wuhl (Westwood One)
6pm-10pm Hank Morse News, Sports and Entertainment
10pm-Midnight "Sporting News Radio"
Weekend Nights 7pm-5am "Sporting News Radio"

They have a good signal in Boston. If 93.7 or Entercom stations don't want to put a Sports Talk station on, if Grace is smart, she should do like this.

On a side note; Does (EVERY) Radio talk show (always) have to put down (every) president? Don't get me wrong, I do when I have free time listen to some talk shows such as Rush, Warren Ballentine, Jerry Doyle Michael Savage and Red Eye Radio to name a few. Most radio talk shows always put down every president. Talk about something else other than the president, Travel, entertainment comedy tv shows, soap operas. Talk about something else

I know you love SNR--again if XKS were to dump talk they could go to Fox Sports and 98.5 would grab SNR for overnights

Remember 3-6 is prime time (drive time) for local talk radio. It;s where they make their money. Having a local host is key to do this, and then they could go to syndie at 6--as they do now.
1200 is syndie in that slot but they're running Sean because CC wants to clear it--and if Howie became available and they could afford him--maybe they can--they'd put him there and delay Sean till 6.

I know you have your ideas and wishes, we all do, but remember in the radio biz you go with your strongest possible lineup. You try to make the most of your talent. This is why RKO runs Howie 3-7 instead of Jerry Doyle. Advertisers want a show appealing to locals. This is prime time, esp. during drive time. This is why EEI runs Ordway and Holley in PM drive, not ESPN. You want local people talking about how the Sox have an 0-5 start, not a national show. You want Howie talking about local and national politics.

As for making fun of or criticizing the Prez, that's what talk radio and a free press is all about.
Do you want a love fest between the media and the government? We work hard and pay our taxes and are concerned about the economy, war, environment, and other issues. It's important to talk issues--and have fun spoofing leaders along the way. Or taking them to task. While he mostly praises conservatives or Republicans, HC has at times criticized or made fun of them
(Jane Swift, Weld, Romney, GW Bush--on immigration or Dubai ports, Scott Brown, Matt Amorello,
Larry Craig). If Romney or even Brown were elected Pres. there would be times he'd criticize or make fun of them. The Left may also on occasion take issue with, or make fun of, Obama, Deval, etc

I can think of some countries where the media didn't make fun of or criticize their leaders--Nazi Germany and Iraq under Saddam...the First Amendment allows us to do this.

And if leaders are thin skinned about media criticism or ridicule, they shouldn't run.

"Talk about something else"? This is what political talk radio does. Maybe TKK will veer away from
politics and talk about Charlie Sheen, gardening, travel, Lady Gaga, and gripes about cell phones and nothing else. You will get your wish...

You're welcome--I'm trying to look at how they approach programming, and it's fairly easy to see
that they'd want local content in aft. drive. And we're a very provincial market when it comes to
political or sports talk--local vs. national shows.

Incidentally, I did meet her a few years ago at the annual Talkers Magazine seminar. At least in person, she seems to be a sincere individual.

Speaking of 96.9 here's a post "Jan" made to my own messageboard about RKO and local talk radio in general

http://wrkotalk.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=general&action=display&thread=110&page=1

>>It's interesting that Bower has now been neutered. When he was on with Jay they both offered comments on controversial issues and it was good radio. After Jay left Bower's show was nothing but fluff and trivial topics. No more hard hitting commentary. Obviously TKK has instructed him to avoid politics and controversy. Does TKK really think this is compelling radio? You would think TKK would replace Jay with a show that would continue to attract his regular listeners in that time slot. By now TKK listeners have found another place on the dial. 680, 850 and 1200 give us some good alternatives. My radio hasn't been back on FM since a few days after Jay was suspended.

Oddly as we talk about possibilities of WTKK abandoning talk (who knows right now if they will) the trend nationwide is for FMs embracing talk (usually conservative). The latest is probably down in Florida where a "Rush Radio 94.7" will debut in Gifford on Monday supposedly.

Not that I care because I'm not into politics left, right, or middle, but 3 Conservative radio stations in Liberal Boston is ludicrous.
Heck, even Liberal WWZN no one listens to.

I think Urban or CHR/Urban would be successful on 96.9.

I'd rather see two strong full time conservative talk stations instead of 3 or 4 weak ones. Not considering WBZ, though tech. they are talk 8pm-5 am...so, PART time with them, there should be RKO and TKK, or RKO and XKS,
or XKS and TKK--and let the odd station out change to something else. It's diluted. Of these
either 96.9 or 1200 might change but I sense Entercom won't change RKO at this point. (To...what?)
