Open Letter To Hank Nevins...

Hey Hank...

I'm in this business because of that radio station. I always wanted to do that. I had one of those rigs that Radio Shack sold a million years ago that came with the mike and the striking key for Morse Code. Had it set up in my bedroom so that I could broadcast to my brother downstairs.

Singing Rats in My Room...watching the Jungle Jay Show, and peeing my pants whenever I saw that statue of the Gorilla say something outrageous. Thought of that station every time I heard Rod Roddy say "Come on down."

I heard Jackson Armstong on that station when I was in Viet Nam. I was thrilled to be hearing a station from "The World." I have the War of the Worlds recording from '73 or '74 with Shane doing nights...burned it to CD a few years ago and sent some copies out...I never got to send him one...no one could give me an address for him. Damn shame...Shane is one of my heroes; truly.

I'm blessed for having worked, albeit such a short time, with you, Sandy and Don Berns at 102. Jimmy Fagan and Abie Marks and their little Irish gig that I produced for them at 'JJL. We were constantly busting up. What a hoot.

Hank, you were asked to do a tough job...give KB life again. I don't care what kind of connections Neavereth has at Saint T & A in South Buffalo...you get to take 2 steps closer to Heaven just for that.

I just think it should have gotten a decent burial. Maybe that's the problem with radio these days. We're not addressing the 'real' decency issue...there ain't enough decent guys in it anymore.

Sincerely,

Magoo

Tony,

Nicely said, and that goes for me too. I would have never gone into radio if I hadn't caught the "fun" bug from WKBW. Johnny Dark of WNBC fame feels the same way, he listened to KB growing up in New Jersey! Now that's power both RF power and personality power.

Why is it they get "The Stones" to do the Superbowl half time, and just about every movie that comes out has a load of '60's music in it but radio is now turning away from this kind of music on AM and FM. I don't get it.

I hope Hank Nevins sees my post he was always nice enough to answer my emails even though I couldn't help him in the ratings. I'm outside the market. A K-Big thank you Hank!

Dear Hank,

I wish I had started this sting.

Thanks for everything you did to put the "old KB" back on the air.

Thanks for realizing that stations on the AM band need to have the local touch.

Thanks for making KB a real Buffalo sound that the rest of the "world" could
enjoy too.....or was it a Lockport sound??????......hahahaha

Thanks for being a real gentleman, true professional and friend.

Thanks for the help at Newfane HS dances and thanks for all the help with
the cable show.

Take care ,

KK

Remember, Hank Nevins left the station months ago (except for occasional airshifts on weekends). Hank Dole was the one who was programming KB along with the Lake. He tightened the playlist, had Mitchell stop taking requests during his shift and wanted to drop the songs with the WOW factor. (Wow I haven't heard that since.....) He had no feelings for the station at all; unlike Hank Nevins who loved the idea of putting the original KB back on the air. Nevins did what he could under his budget restraints and lack of corporate/promotional support. Dole had no interest in keeping KB alive. Let's see what happens when the ratings fall back to business radio days. 0.4-behind WLVL WJJL and WUFO.
