Open the door! Another foot wants in.

APe and Matt, you guys are showing your age, so will I. APE, sounds like you are a pupil from the 70's. I remember WGVL 105.5 back when FM was nothing. What a great sounding station, before its time I'm afraid. I also hung out at Dubs on NW 13th Street next to the Rancher where my mommy bought my new jeans every year before school. I'm a product of the 80's, remember 0-10-1 in 1979, yeah I lived thru that and Charlie Pell (RIP), Galen Hall, then Spurrier. Matt, you are right Rich Fields sounds great on "The Price is Right". Another Rock 104 grad that is still thriving in an otherwise lackluster business is Pauly Castronovo. Check him out at CC/Miami's BIG 105.9. Been doing the morning gig for years and sounds great!
Do you remember Tom "Dynamite" Davis when he moved to Z 93.7 in Ocala? I loved WGGG, but WAKA 1390 also known as 14K was SENSATIONAL, especially after Jeri Banta got his hands on it. ;)

Tip #2: Clear Channel Orlando does not hire board-ops from outside. You have to start as an intern and work you way up. They may interview outside board-ops, but that is only to satisfy EEOC rules regarding interviewing minorities.

Given that CC Orlando board-ops quit every week, it's next to impossible to not get a job offer after the end of your internship due to the high turnover.

Tip #3: If you do work for CC Orlando, do not anger the talent. Shannon Burke, Phillips, and the Monsters have no problem with cutting your career off at the knees if you do something to p.o. them. (Not speaking from personal experience, this is just a known fact around Maitland).

Tip #4: If you sleep with one of the girls in promotions, make sure it is at the end of their internship. Unless you hang around the UCF campus alot, you will not have to worry about ever running into them again.

Biggest tip of all

DON'T GET INTO RADIO.

You are 34 and have a family. That is the best reason to stay away from this fickle business. Not that there are too many other jobs in the states right now that ARE stable unless you are in education, health, or work for the government.

The job market is very strong in CHINA right now though, thanks to Congress and the present and most recent past Presidential administrations.

Next - prepare for the North American Union and the curve that it will present beyond how bad the job market is now.

Bad sign when all you see is the larger fish swallowing all the smaller fish and now the new trend looks like "going private".

It is obvious that, after getting the capital infusions these companies need to fuel their purchase power, they don't want to be beholding to stockholders with strong opinions about how they should run things and how radio should really sound.

Radio used to be a great business. Now, the only distinction between it and fast food is that employees are not yet required to wear paper hats.

;D AMEN! At least ya didn't have to wear a "GO RILLA Suit" BIG APE!

I wouldn't expect Shannon Burke of all people to have that kind of power. I'd imagine Dan Sileo would. Could be worse though. They're not Todd Schnitt.

And I have to agree with everyone saying don't get into radio. At least not traditional radio. You would basically be boarding the Titanic after everyone's on the lifeboats. Radio is a business where you can work your ass off, get great ratings, have wonderful listeners, and get rewarded with a pink slip. Worst of all, everyone you make friends with will betray you if it means furthering their career. Talent bitches about management all they want, rightfully so, but radio jocks can be just as dishonest, phony, and backstabbing if they want to, and usually are.

If you want to be a DJ and spin tunes, try the internet. WiFi is coming to cars soon enough so you may as well get in on the ground floor. You may not get the instant listenership FM has, but you'd have complete control and be much happier.

Hey...Fruit Face..I don't ever remember working for you and I know you never worked for me..Get real! BIG APE!

LIVINGFRUIT...you just gave away your radio experience by your comments. The only thing you left out was a lot of common sense and the phrase, "Net Rules Man!"

First, there isn't any money in internet radio....and everybody's whole family is doing a show or got a "network."

When does the net (RADIO) start making money? When the broadcast monsters that are now screwing up the terrestrial airwaves, get control of it.

Yes, the net is going to be global and mobile soon but it's who gets CONTROL that says what gets to be heard. Besides, you gonna crack open your piggy bank and pay all those music royalties??

Fellow broadcasters, take this boy out for a good stuff drink. The world has been bought and sold and the things the future holds for you to enjoy as a consumer are NOT the things you will enjoy as a DOER.

Honey - are you outta your mind???

This is NOT the business to get into if you're single and 20. It's especially NOT the business to get into if you're 34 with 3 kids. Stay away and thrive!

Have you read any of these other threads?

Run - don't walk - to find another career!

Amen.

This sinking ship of a business may look interesting from the outside, but its not for the faint of heart. Do your kids a favor and find something that makes you happy AND makes you money. Someday they are going to want to go to college and you're not going to be able to afford that on a 2007 radio salary.

hey you guys. Another person passionat about the radio.
the thing about me is, i'm blind but that never stopped me from thinking i could work in this field :).
I love to DX and listen to the sound quality of stations. I hope to start to intern at a station soon. I'd like to intern at a rock station but will take whatever i can get. It wil be interesting to see what i can intern at. I have thought about interning at orock, but if they flip then maybe i won't. depends on what happens. I have ran a bored a few times. it was a bored at school so i do know about "faders" "gane" and things of that nature.
any people that work in radio in the orlando area, if you read this, feell free to pm me and let me know if you can help me :). thank you.
I know radio can't replace a day job but i still want to do it.

Austngrace..if you want to have FUN and do radio but the money isn't important..do a podcast or buy a server and put your own creative stuff out there on the net. The business is about the next best thing to Waste Management. I am a DXer and a ham...that' lots of fun because you don't ever have to constantly look over your shoulder to know if you are being stabbed in the back or are going to be eliminated.

READ WHAT THESE PEOPLE WHO ARE IN RADIO OR HAVE BEEN, HAVE TO SAY.

I would rather my kid go to prison than into radio.

THANKS, 101.

I have worked EVERYWHERE!!! I should never have bought a home - just a tent.

Whatcha thanking 101 for..She or He was talking to me...BIG APE! Dummy..but no, Tennessee heard about me beforehand and said Hmm..No Thanks!!

WOCL-FM 105.9 is another prime example of why you should choose another profession, especially if you have a mortgage and a family. If you're single and don't mind moving all around then go for your dream.

you know what, i think i'm still gonna do radio but as a side job. i'm gonna try to intern at jrr or something like that. i'm more of a rock guy but would take a gig at pretty much anything except magic. not a sapppy love song kinda guy. magic has good light rock but don't wanta run the bored when delila is on or else i'll fall assleep. rotfl. anyway i'm done.
