OPENING BID 50,000 for WSUB

WSUB call letters not the station......from Chris Dipaola's Facebook page. He's looking to raise money.

quote........
"Hot off the press as of October 12, 2012! Press releases will go out next week.
For our 2012 fundraiser, we are auctioning off our WSUB call letters to the highest bidder. The bidder must have an FCC licensed AM, FM, LPFM, TV, or LPTV station. The opening bid is $50,000! 10 percent of your bid will go to the American Cancer Society. WSUB-LP is owned by the Buzz Alternative Radio Foundation Inc., a non profit corporation. All bids must be posted on this facebook wall. The cut off date is December 31st, 2012."

Also, why is this on the Providence board instead of the R.I. board? WSUB-LP can't be heard in Providence over the air!

There's no rule against making a donation or compensating a station to release the calls, then the company immediately applies for the released calls.

Good move on Chris' part when Cumulus made the bone-headed move of giving up the WSUB calls that have been in place for decades and decades in the submarine capitol of the world.

However, I don't believe anyone's going to give him 50 grand for the calls.

What difference does it make?1230 am in Westerly is considered a PROVIDENCE market station but you can't hear it in Providence.Besides how often is that board used? The Providence Board holds disscusions for the Cape and surrounding areas.

WBLQ a Providence market station? Since when?!?! New London market is more like it.

That Rhode Island board isn't used much which is why it'd be good to get the tumbleweeds out over there! WSUB-LP is not a Providence-market station so why put it here? I also don't understand the fawning over those 2 stations.

Its a Providence Market station..When he first acquired it he wanted to do something.I forget what but a Providence station was doing it.Then he wanted to change the COL to Conn town in order to do it.

Again, how? First off, to which station are you referring? Secondly, they are both in S.W.R.I. which, as far as I know, counts as New London. Also included would be WCRI-AM-FM & most likely, WRNI-FM & WJZS.

Could the end be mercifully near for his radio "empire"? Selling a call sign to raise money? That sounds fairly desperate and he appears to be moonlighting as the "Long Island bureau chief" for a nearby CT station to add to the impression.

Sorry, but I've never been a fan of his efforts. There are many better run college stations and very many small community stations in the area that are infinity better.

His stint on WJJF is to maintain his relationship with Fuller, where his career began. If you're looking to grow, hitch your cart to Fuller. He's a hell of a businessman.

This isn't a sign of financial distress at all. Wouldn't you like an extra 50 grand if you could get it for some legendary calls? People put property up for sale all the time without any real desire to sell it, simply to see if anyone will pay. Everything in this world has a price. May as well see if anyone's willing to pay it, right?

I remember a long time ago hearing that WPRO was considered to have the best call letters in the nation. Nothing says it better than PRO. Now those are call letters worth some money! Not so sure about "SUB' though. It doesn't even sound appealing unless it's 5 PM and I'm hungry.

If the WSUB calls were worth keeping, 980 would've kept them! The goodwill from the call had disappeared when it flipped to Spanish. WXLM became the talk station in New London. I agree with the first poster who said maybe this is a sign of something more financially troubling. Also, where does the part about WJJF come from? I know he worked there years ago but I don't know of any association with WJJF since that call reappeared on 94.9.

Chris Dipaola is "Chris Hampton, Long Island Beaureau Chief" on 94.9 News Now, WJJF.

Which means he records stories off of Patch and they run them in the pre-recorded newscasts.

All of Washington County is considered part of the Providence DMA.

All Rhode Island licensed radio stations are in the Providence Market.

I have the report on file Jay if you'd like to see it, but I know you'll take my word for it.
