...Specifically about Memphis Morning News.
Before I do this... I suppose I should give qualifiers as to my experience... I've been in and out of radio for the past 15 years, working in and with stations and networks in Memphis, Ft Lauderdale, Missouri, and California both engineering and on-air. Currently I am in an out-cycle, so I have had time to enjoy Memphis radio for around 2 years now.
I have a very distinct fear that this will become a rant, therefore I will couch each statement with an explanation. Here goes.
-I find myself missing Forrest Goodman on MMN.
His professionalism and smooth delivery of the news and hosting is unparalleled by anyone currently at WREC. Yes, I am a fan.
-What is the deal with the "windows sound scheme" sounds constantly interjecting themselves into the air chain???
...from a very good source, I heard that a member of their on-air team has been bringing their personal laptop in to play sounders, clips etc. While I applaud the effort... I can't overlook the sound effects.
This last one is pared down significantly from what it was... I was warned against being a ****wad.
-a certain member of the MMN staff has a tendancy to interject his/her opinion WAAAY too much... also tends to be a bit ahem a lot arrogant... he/she also has a tendancy to "ah...um" a lot.
When I was taught how to be professional on the air, I was taught to 1. Not use the station to further my personal opinions, 2. To be personable and conversational, and 3. TO HAVE MY THOUGHT and COPY READY BEFORE I OPENED THE MIC!!! This particular member has over the last week:
*attacked another member of the on-air staff for suggesting that there MIGHT be sexism in this presidential campaign. Went on for quite a while.
*has "ah... umm"ed his/her way through copy at least 5 times in 2 minutes. (do they even use copy??)
*and I am really not going to go there with the arrogance thing.
It's a shame to just listen to a station for top-of-the-hour news and Paul freakin Harvey. Thanks for letting me soapbox for a few.
