Operation Snowflake

Operation Snowflake is now “powered by 69 News WFMZ” and it sounds like the CC staff is just reading the online postings rather than compiling and editing the list in-house. Not long ago this was the signature winter service of the Allentown CC cluster, now it’s more like a cost saving opportunity. The school districts text inclement weather announcements, so maybe it’s time for radio to get out of this business. It’s very hard to listen to this way with public, parochial and businesses etc. all lumped together.

This sure was a major endeavor for WAEB at one time. I can still remember staying up all night filling out the plastic coated 3x5 cards, with a grease pencil, in "Pherb's" office back in '97... ;D

How did Bailey get that nickname anyway?

It's ironic. This is another example of terrestrial radio just not getting it. What percentage of anyone's audience, tunes in to radio for school closings anymore? I understand if it's 10 years ago, but today? Please. There are too many easier sources of information.

For those that do not o own a computer and do not have a data package on there cell phone.

Those without online computers or cellphones have other alternatives that have reduced the importance of radio for this:

1) School districts' own outbound call-bots: We get our calls at roughly 515 AM when delays / cancellations exist.

2) WFMZ-TV continuously scrolls the announcements - no need to set your watch for :10 and :40 to hear Gunther read them.
