Opie and Anthony Out at WYSP?

Re: Opie and Anthony Out at WYSP, WHERE TO NEXT?

So, let the speculation begin!!! Would they actually go over to Radio 104.5? Would Clear Channel want them? Would Citadel/ABC make a blockbuster deal to acquire an FM signal? If not to WRFF, I am not sure where they would wind up.

Mabye family radio could sell 106.9 to Citadel/abc

and do fm talk with it

Opie's quotes (some exact, some slightly paraphrased) this morning:

"Once we're off WYSP, we'll only be off the air in Philly TEMPORARILY. Boy, do we have a DOOZY!"

Will O&A be parked on The Big Talker? Or even better, Air America's new "Philadelphia affiliate" WVPO (according to AAR in a recent press release touting new affiliates; more details on the NYC board)?

Oooh, a 250-watt daytime only station that's closer to Wilkes-Barre than Philly -- now that's a doozy. :D

Family Radio would want something in return. 640 WKDN, anyone? That would be a logical choice. And, despite what the gentleman before me said, it wouldn't be "to acquire a major Philly FM just to put Opie and Anthony on it". I think Fahrid would rather program an FM signal than run a Radio Disney repeater on AM.

Citadel doesn't own 640. The Radio Disney O&Os and ESPN Radio O&Os are all still owned by Disney.

Uhhhhhggggg. Man these conspiracy theories are simply amazing.

If a watered down version of O&A didn't work on a station that supported talk AND has a legendary active-talk history what makes you think that they would work on some random FM signal with no history? That's as good as adding a talk show to a non-talk, music intensive station (RFF).

Here, you want a scenario where an Fm signal...or better yet 3 FM signals could open up in Philly and then who knows what happens?

Radio One.

They have already started selling off stations in other markets...last I looked the stock was absolutely in the toilet - and no, before you say "all radio companies..." not like this, they are at $3.55, and when most companies tanked and then settled in Radio One continued to tank...from $15 to the $3 range (see comparison to Clear Channel).

http://finance.yahoo.com/q/bc?t=5y&s=ROIAK&l=on&z=m&q=l&c=CCU

The last thing of value for that company are the actual sticks they own. Don't recall the cost of WDRE in the 90's, but Y100 cost them $88,000,000 and WRNB $35,000,000+. They ain't never getting that dough back, but maybe they cut their operating losses and try to get some of that money back.

So, new management team in Philadelphia to clean things up as a last ditch effort for the "Urban Radio Specialists" to throw a hail marry pass in the urban radio battle. Shortly, Radio One is going to realize that the Philadelphia experiment has failed miserably and they are going to try to sell their pathetic sticks of 103.9 and 107.9 in a package with that 100.3 flame thrower (thank you Michael Powell).

So, let your minds wonder what could happen to the Philadelphia radio dynamic if there is only WDAS and WUSL left as "urban" and 3 brand spankin new stations...maybe one with O&A as their terrible morning show.

I think if ANY Fm signal(s) became available, you can bet Fahrid will be right there to plunk down a few mil to have signals in a major market for Citadel.

O&A, even watered down, is still more compelling than anything out there, including (obviously) your hero, Stern. "Goose is cooked"? "Terrible morning show"? Sorry, its just something I'd expect out of Howard fans.

Hoo hoo, I invented everything, right Robin? HOO HOO HOO, tell 'em Fred. I invented talk on rock radio. Those guys ripped me off... HOO HOO HOO HOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooo

Not if they can't get past Entercom - I'm sure they'd want an FM signal in their backyard (HQ is in Bala Cynwyd).

Interesting. On one hand I would think Philly would be one of the last markets they would sell, since its one of their biggest. Sofar, its been mostly the smaller markets they've been selling in. However, as you point out there stock is so bad, they may need to sell a few big station.

I don't know how well selling a 3 pack would work. Obvisously non of the current big ownership groups could buy without going over the limit. So it would have to be someone wanting to enter the market. I would hope entercom, since they're supposed to be one of the better radio groups out there, and as mentioned above, Philly is their home market. How can they not have a station here?

"More compelling" is a matter of personal taste. More people found Stern compelling enough to listen to than found O&A compelling to listen to. Even if I agree with you that the Stern show hasn't been good in 10 years.

FMQB has recently reported on satellite listenerships....O & A's numbers are less than 25% of Stern cume and that's with the "Full Blown-

no censorship" show.

The only "DOOZY" :p O&A could drop on Philly is maybe buying their way onto a brokered station. I can't think of anyone who would

take on that mess and pay top dollar.

What about WWDB 860AM for Opie & Anthony? What are they running since Imus left?

Mancow? So I guess they're not that committed to "Money Talk" in the AM. Wouldn't O&A for free be better than whatever they're paying him?

Farid just negotiated to purchase ABC. How much free capital do you think Citadel has left to even get into an LMA situation (read: bribe) with a station to carry O&A?

Say what you want about Stern: He's been smart enough to know where his bread is buttered, and subtle enough to draw the line in the right way. We can debate taste, but the fact is 0&A owe a lot to HS, and didn't know when not to p!%% on the boss' shoes. Howard built Infinity. He has better representation. 0&A sign anything to be wealthy, which is not a good long term plan. They shot their load into their feet, and now they have to worry about the lawyers that hemmed them up but good.

Funny and smart is good. Funny with hubris about what you are in the world is not-which is where they are today.

This whole thing looks like it was done seat of the pants. If they were always planning on moving Kidd Chris to mornings, why would they have fired half his staff when they dumped Free-FM for music. Aren't they just going to hire them all back now?

And they wouldn't be committed to "Money Talk" had they aired O&A to begin with!

Thank you for playing.

I know this was years ago but.... Back in the mid-90's, didn't Entercom own (I think) Q102 for, like, a month? After EZ, but before the Clear Channel predecessor (Evergreen/Chancellor/Pyramid/Jacor/AMFM).

Bingo. They've got no idea what they're doing, and they're now in a ratings panic mode with currently no morning or afternoon drivetime show. Things are just stellar over there at 400 Market.
