Opportunity for WYSL/WXXI? Local Computer Show Gets the Axe by CC Cuts

Sound Bytes, which has been on Rochester radio for nearly 20 years now, was one of the victims of the budget slashing over at Clear Channel. I honestly didn't follow the show as much after it left WXXI-AM for commercial-loaded WHAM, plus the show was on Sunday and often interrupted by sports. But it's a unique opportunity for a pick up by either WYSL for the weekend lineup, or perhaps even back to WXXI-AM where Bob Smith used to be the master of ceremonies.

One of the reasons, I was told, that Sound Bytes went from WXXI to WHAM was because the computer team wasn't paid for their show at 1370-AM.

Considering that WXXI recently offered "early retirements" to several employees in order to balance its budget, I don't see how management can justifybringing Sound Bytes back if Nick & Company still wants to be paid.

As for WYSL carrying the show, that is something Bob Savage will have to address.

Which is understandable; however, the participants might consider that the free publicity generated by the program and a fee besides is asking a tad too much in the current economic climate. Considering the guests who appear regularly on 1370 Connection, there are evidently experts in other fields who are happy to share their knowledge and experience with WXXI listeners.

Anything is possible I guess with regards to Sound Bytes coming back to WXXI. After all the same scenario occurred with political gabfester Curt Smith. First he's on XXI, then he jumps ship and goes to WHAM. After WHAM showed him the front door he's back at 280 State Street.

Don't get me wrong, Sound Bytes is a great program for those listeners who are into computers. However specialized radio shows are becoming a thing of the past on most stations.

Sound Bytes was a fun show to do, all the years we all did it together. It was not just entertaining, it performed a useful service for a lot of people. Haven't heard from the three amigos since they left WXXI for what promised to be Clear Channel's financially greener pastures back in '01. So I don't know how they might feel about the changes they've been through over the years, or whether they'd want to keep the show going elsewhere...

I can only say I don't miss six-day workweeks (it's nice to have a weekend again like normal people).

Don't get use to having your weekends off. With Simon retiring this weekend and Bud about to leave, it wouldn't surprise me if the radio announcing and news staffs ends up working a six day week.

After all why spend money on part-timers and casuals when it wouldn't cost the station anymore to have a full-timer work an extra day?

(Rochester, NY) May 15, 2009 – Sound Bytes, America’s longest running computer talk show is moving to Jazz90.1 WGMC-FM beginning June 6. The program, now in its 19th year on Rochester radio, comes to Jazz90.1 from 1180 WHAM in Rochester and can be heard every Saturday from 12-2 p.m.

Sound Bytes offers answers to common computer questions in an entertaining two-hour broadcast. Hosted by computer gurus Nick Francesco, Dave Enright and Steve Rea, Sound Bytes has answered questions for thousands of listeners over its 19-year history. Sound Bytes helps everyone from the most experienced to amateur computer user in an easy-to-understand on air dialog.

“We are very excited to have Sound Bytes on Jazz90.1,” said Rob Linton, Station Manager of Jazz90.1. “Nick, Dave and Steve are true experts at their craft, and I know their program will be appreciated and enjoyed by thousands of people every week.”

Jazz90.1 WGMC is one of the last remaining full time jazz radio stations in the country, playing over 150 hours of straight ahead jazz every week. The station also strives to provide programming not heard anywhere else on the dial, such as the Spanish language program the Latin Essence, the German Radio Program, Lithuanian and Italian language programs, blues, polka and much more.

Jazz90.1 WGMC is a 15,000 watt station that can be enjoyed throughout the Rochester area, and worldwide on the Internet. The station receives no funding from the Greece Central School District, but is housed within the new library media center at Olympia High School. For more information, you can visit www.jazz901.org and www.soundbytes.org.

Whew. Weekends will remain free. :)

Best of luck to the Byte crew at their new radio home.

So how much is WGMC going to shell out for this program?

I can't believe that the Sound Bytes crew will do this for nothing. If that were the case they would have never left WXXI-AM.

Mark. To address your question. Sound Bytes is not paying for their time on WGMC, nor have I asked them to. I will tell you this, the relationship will prove to be wonderful for both WGMC and Sound Bytes. The guys are personal friends of mine, as I was their producer for years at WHAM. I am confident that the program will be a great addition to our weekend programming. Be sure to tune in! :)

Rob,

Congrats on WGMC landing Sound Bytes. That's a great group and I know they will help attract more people to listen to your station.

Best wishes,

Giardina
