Oprah joins 60 Minutes...thoughts?

Certainly a great catch for 60 Minutes, the longest running primetime program in the history of television. I watched her debut tonight and was underwhelmed. While she is still sharp and intelligent, this segment reminded me of a CNN panel discussion. Not sure if this is the future of 60 Minutes, but I hope it is not. Stick to just good solid reporting.

I thought Oprah's segment with Frank Luntz was interesting and worthwhile. While it probably isn't something 60 Minutes should feature regularly, I think media does better work when they actually go talk to ordinary Americans.

If Oprah had instead interviewed E.J. Dionne about politics for the 5000th time I would have flipped the channel - pundits in Washington and New York do a terrible job of capturing nuances in public opinion, because they don't actually hear public opinion!

I disagree. I think this highlights the tabloidization of the show. Certainly they've fallen a long way from the days when they employed serious journalists like Mike Wallace, Ed Bradley and Morley Safer.

I wouldn't be surprised if Oprah decides to join The Talk in the not so distant future. That would be a huge ratings boost for that show...

Oprah has a way of making everything all about her. Remember CBS's tribute to Mary Tyler Moore that aired the weekend after her death? It was wall-to-wall Oprah with HER memories of MTM, HER reflections on what the MTM Show meant to women, HER long-ago interviews with MTM. She just wouldn't shut up and show more clips from Dick Van Dyke and the MTW Show that would have been a much more fitting way to remember a wonderful actress. I expect her contributions to 60 Minutes to be little more than extended opportunities for her to expound on the greatness that is Oprah.
