Oprah to announce date of final show

Discovery Health's switch to OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) has already been pushed back at least once...with this announcement, I could definitely see it delayed until after Oprah's show has wrapped up.

This will be just like Howard Stern leaving terrestrial radio for satellite... Only difference is, there are far more cable subscribers than SiriusXM subscribers, though availability of the Discovery/OWN network varies...

Are you saying that Oprah will just simply start fresh on her cable network?

Not necessarily, though it's not clear yet whether or not she'll host a talk show on OWN. NPR did a segment on Oprah this morning. But her influence on OWN's other programming will be considerable. For example, they will produce a show about very special people (sounds kind of like CNN's "Heroes" segments). The difference is - those people will be hand-picked by Oprah.

From the Associated Press:

Oprah's departure presents problem for TV stations

For the hundreds of network affiliates who depended on Winfrey to deliver millions of viewers every day, Friday's announcement starts an 18-month clock to find a way to fill the space left behind after the end of the most successful daytime talk show in television history.

Are affiliates really going to be scrambling for programming once Oprah is gone? I don't think so...

It won't surprise me if many of the Oprah affiliates with news departments just simply add more news.

According to the article...

Discovery is pouring resources into OWN to prepare for its January 2011 launch.

They're looking to launch before her show goes off the air.

The lady has been on for 23 years. You have NEVER accidently tuned in for just a few minutes??? You must not own a television set.

Absolutely not. If I'm surfing and see her, I turn the channel in seconds. Isn't the show just for sillw women?

I've seen enough to say good riddance. Over the years, her ego has grown bigger and bigger and her core audience dumber and dumber. Apologies if you may find my comment displeasing, but that's how I see it.

Glad she's not going to be around Chicago any more too.

And, Oprah, if you're reading this, please take your Gayle King with you. It's not nice to move away and leave your pets behind.

In my opinion stations that carry both Oprah and Dr. Phil or Oprah and Dr. Oz or Oprah and Rachael Ray will probably move those shows into the 4PM time slot. And in the case where those 3 are on competitors watch them move it into the 4PM times slot. (There is a clause that Dr. Phil, Dr. Oz, and Rachael Ray can not air at the same time as Oprah).

Didn't Oprah announce her "retirement" once before, a few years ago, only to not go through with it? If I remember correctly, she should have been off the air around 2006. So I'm not holding my breath waiting for her to go away.

Here in Nashville, it is the stuff of legend about how she got her start here. So much so to the point that I am sick of hearing about it! Her father still runs his barber shop in East Nashville, and even has a street named for him! (Yes, it's named for him, and not his daughter!)

Gayle needs to come back to anchoring the news on Channel 3 in Hartford.

Fun idea, but I don't see that happening. For one thing, Gayle is a little too long in the tooth to pull off that gig. For another, she's too busy chasing around after Oprah's scraps to bother with such a demotion.

I once worked with someone who came from WFSB and worked with Gayle. This person's comment was: "Gayle King is Oprah's best friend and she never let any of us forget it." That was about 20 years ago, so imagine how much worse she is now!

Gayle did have her own national TV talk show back in the mid 1990's (I think it was during that time) but she flopped big time and I believe that Oprah was involved with that show. Anyone remember that?

Yes. "The Gayle King Show" was a Harpo production produced out of Hartford, Conn. It was a half-hour and was packaged with "Martha Stewart Living" as a full hour by King-World. I believe it only lasted the 1997-98 season, at which point "Martha" took over the hour.

In Los Angeles, the other Harpo shows air on other stations in the market...Dr. Phil and Rachael Ray on KCBS (Phil also reruns week-ago episodes on KCAL), The Doctors on KCAL, and Dr. Oz on KTTV. KABC, of course, has had Oprah since its national debut, and its only other daily syndicated programs are Regis & Kelly, Jeopardy!, and Wheel of Fortune. No one knows what's going to happen in two years, when the Oprah timeslot becomes available. Some stations would most likely do expanded newscasts (KABC already has a 2 1/2 hour block of news), do a local talk show of their own (much in the same vein that Oprah and Regis started), or put in place whatever other syndicated junk they could find. Hell, if only the newscasts weren't as financially viable, maybe the ABC O&Os should bring back the afternoon movies ;)
