Optimal Processing Setting

Hey everyone,

I recently purchased a Rodecaster mixing board to use for some voiceover work. The Rodecaster is a pretty unique device in the sense that it has built-in audio processing by Aphex. All of the settings can be manipulated to achieve any sound that you’re looking for (mimicking what you could do with a professional setup in a real studio).

I’m curious about how I should adjust some of the settings, as I’ve never been a professional engineer and have never messed around with real audio processing gear. I purchased a condenser mic, and am basically taking my best guess of what the settings should (probably) be. Here is what I set so far:

High Pass Filter:

I turned it off. I don’t think I would need this setting.

De-“esser”:

Threshold = -29.4dB
Attack = 0.7ms
Gain = 0.0
Ratio = 3.0:1
Release = 210.0ms
Frequency = 5000.0Hz

Noise Gate:

Threshold = -36.6dB
Attack = 30.0ms
Hold = 50.0
Release = 200.0ms
Range = 11.0dB
Hystersis = 0.20

Compressor:

Threshold = -27.6 db
Ratio: 2.0:1
Attack - 0.70ms
Release = 21.0ms
Gain = 2.6db

Equalizer:

High Bell = 100000 Hz
Mid Bell = 400 Hz
Low Bell = 100 Hz
High Gain = 2.4 dB
Mid Gain = -1.2dB
Low Gain = 2.4dB

Exciter:

Big Bottom Tune = 90 Hz
Drive = 73%
Aural Exciter Tune = 3500 Hz
Harmonics = 80%

Panning:
Center

Anyway, that’s what I’ve got so far (based on my rough estimates of what was used at the last station I worked for). Obviously there’s no way this will ever sound as good as a professional setup, but I think it could be fun to play around with. Are there other settings that might be more optimal for a decent condenser mic?
