Question:

I have an 8100-A that I would like to have brought up to above spec/repair.

Cosmetically, it's in good shape, I'd like to shove it in as a reliable backup.

There's a whine in the stereo gen.

It needs to be recapped, etc...I'm curious who you all would suggest for this job.

Thanks!

Orban still services them IIRC. You should give them a call.

I had the exact same problem two days ago and contacted Orban regarding repairs...here's the text of what I was told:

Typically this symptom is caused by a defective output chip, IC704. However there can be other reasons for the failure as well, so it's good practice to verify that this is the problem before remedial action. For
example: the L-R path, balanced modulator might be broken; IC701 might be defective; the 38kHz PLL section might be broken... Many possibilities.

If IC704 proves to be defective, the original part is an AD518N
(discontinued by Analog Devices). Orban part number: 24007.202.

The recommended replacement is the MA332:

24018.202.01 IC, LIN MA332 DIP8

However, the LF357 will also work:

24010.202.01 LF357

They recommend you contact Orban for prices.

Hmmm...took them a while to call me back to.

By the way, someone was looking for this contact information, so here it is:

Orban service is moving to Arizona from San Leandro, so during the transition, it might take an extra day for them to get back to you. As of two weeks ago, the move was in progress, but only half-finished. I dropped off an 8200 that got hit by a sky surge, and they hoped to turn it around quickly, but that it might have to go to Arizona first.

JJ is great, but can be kind of slow. YMMV.
