Optimod 8400 AGC vs. Omnia ONE AGC

Okay, so we got our 8400 back in, repaired, and now I'm doing some A/B testing...

...And it leads me to yet another Omnia question.

On the 8400, there is some sort of "quick release" technology in the 2-band AGC, which allows the AGC to release faster when transitioning from loud to soft material (say, from the loud end of a song to a quiet intro of the next song). In our Omnia ONE, the AGC releases very slowly when going from loud to soft passages. The only preset which doesn't seem to have this problem is the Cosmic preset...but I don't want to run the Cosmic preset.

I have heard at least one other station have this issue with their Omnia (WCGQ-Columbus, GA), so I know we're not alone out there. What is the remedy? Does it have anything to do with the processor's "Return To Zero" setting in the AGC?

All Omnias have a quick release feature as you described...the parameter is called "make up gain".
Check out the Omnia manual for a full explanation of this function!

The front end AGC sections of these two boxes are different. The Omnia actually offers you the WB-AGC and the 4-Band section. Both of which have their own set of adjustments. I would not recommend comparing these two products - section by section - as the topologies are different based upon the core design of each system.

Frank,

Sorry again for making a bad comparison...it's the only other box I've personally had experience using...

...but I am curious as to what your thoughts are concerning Make-Up Gain controls in the ONE. Mark has been a huge help to me in you support department, but I have to ask...do you see Make-Up Gain controls coming on a future firmware upgrade? Or would you recommend that I just shoot for a preset with decent Make-Up Gain controls already in place? Do the Make-Up Gain settings actually vary from preset to preset in the ONE?

Omnia. One contains the Make-Up gain function. This was set based upon user feedback with the existing Omnia processors. Since our marketing dept asked that we make Omnia. One simple to adjust, we created a GUI that didn't contain the same number of adjustable functions as Omnia. One's siblings. We'll take your comments on advisement, and who knows what the future holds! :)

Yes, the Make-Up function is set based upon presets. More agressive presets employ more Make-Up gain. Mark can assist you with further detail.
