Optimod 9100 question

Anyone have a tip or two on how to get more low end out of one of these? I have one that I did modify a bit but maybe one of you has a better idea. Also, I could use a yellow, green or red EQ module.

I know there was a "Disco modification" for the Optimod 9000 which drove the low bass frequencies straight into the clipper... but it was famous for burning out modulation transformers.

Only a possible lead, but I wonder who engineered the former KDAY 1580 AM through the 1980s until 1991, when it was the only rap and hip hop station in Los Angeles. They ran the station in AM stereo, and I would not be surprised if they also had every bass modification known to man, given their format and the trunk-thumping equalization curves preferred by its audience. Maybe you can track that person down and ask what they did?

Incidentally, many engineers ran Aphex Big Bottoms ahead of their Optimods in the old days to add low end weight to their thinner-sounding songs psychoacoustically. That's another possible approach.

Even before that, many stations I know had gangs of two or more LA-3A units with home-built crossover networks so that they could adjust the audio going into the Optimod or whatever peak limiter they were using at the time.

Thank you! I will check it.

Hi Phil:

Check C30 (100uF) on safety clipper Cards 7 (and 10 if stereo). If it is low in capacity the bass would be restricted.

Dan
Do a “proof” as outlined in the manual to insure the low end is flat. Also on card 6, see if R7 is present (listed as optional on the schematic). It is the release time of band 1. The value used in modifications of the 8100 XT2 was 1 megaohm. Try that first then experiment with that value.
