Orban 424a Help

A fellow engineer has one of these in his personal studio and mentioned to me that the audio performance has been on the decline. He asked me if I know anybody who still worked on these, as I imagine some of the parts may no longer be in production. If anybody can provide me with some leads for him that would most appreciated.

Simplest, if you don't mind warming up the soldering iron, is to replace the filter caps and the rest of the electrolytic caps.

Don't recall anything really exotic--mostly common IC's. I have one in line, running in a split mode, to process incoming POTS feeds.

Just so others know, Bill Sacks also works on other Orban gear as my associate is sending his 424a in to him for reconditioning. I believe it's his own lack of time which kept him from doing so himself, so it's nice to know that this is something that can be outsourced when needed.

Most every piece of "dated" broadcast gear I get in my hands at least gets all the electrolytics replaced which helps cure a multitude a problems.

Hi all-
Sorry I took so long to respond, we've been very busy.

Please excuse the brief commercial announcement below.

Yes, Bill and I are dedicated to providing factory authorized refurbishing for all legacy analog Orban gear AM, FM, plus the blue and black faced studio gear. We have maintained a deep working relationship with Orban/CRL giving us unique access to their underlying analog technology used in the legacy products and allowing us to properly service them with the professionalism they deserve..
In addition to replacing electrolytic caps we also replace the ceramic and tantalum capacitors with high performance film types in all critical audio paths. We also install modern ultra low distortion opamps in the audio paths as required by the particular design. We have the hard to find transconductance amps (CA3080 & CA3280), which we have had replicated and reprinted. At this time, due to limited supply, we cannot sell these reprinted CA 3XXX series parts outside of a refurbishing job.

We're are also a dealer for NEW Orban products as well. In a reversal of the normal phrasing "we now sell what we service".

Thanks for all of your kind words and support, and if you have any further questions feel free to email or call us.
