Orban 6200 DAB

I am thinking about purchasing one of these for my new webcast. But what I want to know is if this processor will allow me to creat a unique sound (EQing) through compression and limiting or if it will just simply keep all my music at a steady volume?

I hope this makes sense.

I believe the 6200 was designed just for that purpose...

It was my intent to purchase a used one of these to put in front of an Optimod 2200 on an FM station. I would up with an Optimod-TV 8282 instead.

I have not specifically used one of these, but according to photos of the unit, it looks as though it would have the same multiband processing and EQ functions to tailor the sound almost any way you want to.

The only thing I would not count on is being able to simulate exactly the sound of a particular station that you like.

The going rate for these seems to be around $1600 on ebay, but I might be tempted to try to make someone a lower offer than that. Just a few years ago they sold new for about $6000!

Good luck!

I have the chance to grab one for 950 and I just want to make sure that I am not going to be wasting some money. I want to get a good sound out of this box, and just have not found a whole lot of info or reviews on it.

I am going to be running all the audio out of a computer into a mixer and from there into this box and back to another computer for encoding and transmission.

I am just really wanting a nice bass sound with a nice presence as well.

Again, I just dont want to waste my money on this box.

Thanks

Might consider the Breakaway Broadcast software.you can download it for free and give it a spin. That would easily be my choice over the 6200.New vs old platform..and it's alot cheaper than 950.00.But if you want orban,i would pay more and get their newer pc card..It's very nice...

I have tried breakaway and it was just not for me. I had a hard time getting a decent sound from it. I am not saying it is faulty software or anything like that, just that it was hard for me to get the right sound from it. I will try it again and see what I can come up with. Possibly I just didnt take the time to really play with it enough.

Thanks

I had a 6200 DAB when I ran my webstream and it made a night and day difference. At the time I wasn't running it as heavy as I did before I pulled the station offline but I got many positive comments on how clear things sounded with it. Prior to that I was running an Aphex FM 202 MKIII with the digital interface card feeding the encoder.

The thing I thnk made a notable difference was that the 6200 DAB allowed you to set the bandwidth feeding the encoder, which allowed it not to "chew" on information that would otherwise get discarded when using lower bitrates.

I have yet to try Breakaway but from what everybody says it would be worthy of consideration, especially when you look at the price difference. I was fortunate enough to break even when I sold my 6200 - had it given me analog outputs other than the monitoring outputs I probably would have kept it as it was a nice sounding processor.

The 6200 will do what you want - allow you to create a signature sound (albeit the Orban flavor) as well as level out the differences between different program elements. It's a processor designed for digital broadcast and essentially, web streaming is a form of digital broadcast (just not OTA). IIRC, it has similar processing as Orban's Optimod PC-1100, but more options (such as allowing AGC output to be routed to one of the outputs while full processing it being sent to another output).

I guess I haven't been looking for a while, here's an ebay one at $1299.

If you can get one for $950 it would be worth it just to play around and see. You won't get hurt at that price if it's a working unit. You might even make a small amount reselling it.
