Can anyone tell me if there is a noticeable quality difference with the Orban 9200U. I am very happy with the my AM Orban 9100 that I have.

One site of mine is 9100A. The other is 9200 on NRSC preset 4.
The 9200 squashes the signal more...you can really hear the AGC. I think it sounds much better. But having the controls on the front of the 9100 for a quick adjustment is easier.<P ID="signature">______________

Can you picture this, Sam? We're sitting in the lobby of a small firm waiting for our appointment. One of the sales reps stops by the receptionist desk on the way out and asks: "Marty, what station is that you are always listening to?" Marty reponds: "Aren't they great. Only station in town where you can hear the AGC."
Or maybe this. Six soccer moms are having morning coffee and discussing what they will do this spring with the flowers at the entrance to the sub-division. One asks the host: "Carol, what station is that you are always listening to?" To which Carol reponds: (see above answer).

It's the ENGINEERING board and he asked if there was a difference...there is. The AGC seems more aggressive on the 9200 presets than what the 9100 can do.<P ID="signature">______________

Are you using the 9100's AGC in "Multi" mode? That chooses more aggressive time constants, as compared to the "Single" mode.

It could be that it needs to be recapped and stuff is failing. Pretty old unit.<P ID="signature">______________

The best part of the Orban 9100 is the ability to make it an Orban 9100B by adding the stereo card. A local here that cares about their AM audio has upgraded the transmitter to CQuam stereo and the stereo 9100B sounds great after it's adjusted properly. I would rather have a 9100B over the 9200; the latest Orban coming out does include stereo again however.
