Ordway vs. Bobby V.

I didn't want to start a whole thread about it, but I was just curious as to the radio pros' thoughts about the Big Show Throwdown yesterday. Is that the kind of stuff that makes management drool or is it just ho-hum?

Well seeing as how it's made national news, and been talked about on the 'other' station I'd wager management is tickled pink. The only bad press is no press, etc etc.

The "Other station" is 98.5 The Sports Hub, which seems to be on it's way to making WEEI the " other station"
Good for Bobby V. It must be frustrating for him

Perhaps someday sports journalists will return to reporting the sports news instead of trying to cause the sports news. Baiting and pushing somebody intentionally to get a reaction is a pretty low way to make a living.

WBZ-FM has stalled a little and the move to FM did help WEEI.

98.5 will now surge with the Patriots just as EEI does with the Sox. Bruins/Celtics is a wash.

Bob Kraft will always allow WEEI full access as they did carry the Revs for years until 98.5 came along.

Baloney. Ordway asked exactly the same question that every remaining Red Sox fan would have asked, and exactly the question that should have been asked, given the Sox' lack of performance and Valentine's apparent inability to get the team to produce. Valentine's response was way over the top (and he emphasized today that he was kidding about punching the Big O in the mouth), but that's not Ordway's fault.

I'm wondering if Bobby Valentine and Glenn Ordway will be the main event at the upcoming WWE rassling pay-per-view card at the "Gahden". :D

Of course, Ordway will be the "good guy", and Valentine would be the "heel" (rassling slang for bad guy) and would probably insult Ordway as being a "Fat A*s".

Seriously, I think Ordway did ask questions that needed to be asked. I only wish Valentine had tried to answer them honestly. His evasion of these questions has lowered his popularity----weak to begin with----even lower.

The Valentine hire, as many thought it would, has turned out to be a disaster. His weekly interview is rivaling Keith Foulk's from a few years back as appointment listening. I have to believe that misery helps radio ratings. Right now the Pats, a powerhouse, uncontroversial team are taking a back seat to the train wreck Red Sox as far as talk radio goes.

Supposedly Valentine, the smartest guy in the room, has dealt with the media before............the NY media and was part of the media at ESPN. He was free with his criticism of a couple Red Sox players at ESPN. He's been interviewed by all three WEEI shows this year and he just seems very uncomfortable and unprepared. The same goes for his interviews with Joe Castig and even little cupcake Jenny Dell. He just can't handle it. He should have been ready for anything Ordway asked.

If Ordway gets good ratings as a result of this it’s hard to fault him or his management, is it?

Is it part of a Sox manager’s contract that he does a weekly appearance on WEEI during baseball season?

I'm not sure if it's part of his Red Sox contract or an agreement with WEEI, but he is compensated for the appearances within the terms of some agreement. I have to believe that if he wanted out of the deal they'd let him, without further pay, of course. He could just answer yes or no and offer nothing if they refused.

Not only does he appear on 'EEI, but he also has a weekly gig on the Michael Kaye (Yankee announcer) Show in NY on Fridays. And of course there's the Bobby Valentine Show on NESN. He seems to think he's pretty media savvy. That's what makes this whole situation a little strange.

I agree that Bobby V. hasn't been a good fit.

But, if 'good fit' means hiring a manager who can get along with a collection of undereducated, socially maladjusted media hacks whose sole objective in life is to attend sporting events for free and eat hoards of food paid for by someone else, then that's not the right way to do it.

The radio contract with Entercom is locked in to the Red Sox manager MUST do a pre-game show.

Bobby V is on his own with ESPN-NY

I think that's definitely a big part of it. Tito Francona was a master at dealing with the media hacks and his players. He was saddled with the three Dominican Divas, Pedro, Manny, and Ortiz also Nomar with a constant puss on his face, screwballs like Millar and Damon, and a headcase like Keith Foulke. With all of that he kept everything under control. If Bobby V. had to deal with that, there'd have been gunplay by now.

For some reason the owners turned on Tito. I bet they're praying for a return to those tranquil and successful times. Tito got along with everyone. Even jerks like Felger left him alone. I seem to remember Eddie Andelman criticizing him, but does that really count?

Bobby V. has managed to alienate the players, the fans, and the media. I'd say that this was one of the "worst fits" of all time. Something tells me every sports fan in New England will be tuned in to hear his interview with Ordway and Holley on Wednesday, even the avid WEEI haters.
