Original "American Top 40" Stations in Kansas

Been listening to the original AT40 shows w/ Casey Kasem on XM these past several weeks. A few weeks back, he mentioned KLOE/Goodland during a 1979 show. I was curious as to which stations in Kansas originally aired these programs.

I know KLOE and KAYS/Hays were AT40 affilliates in the 1970s. KEDD/Dodge City had the show in 1984-85 because I was working at KWKR/Garden City during this time and used to listen to Casey on KEDD.

Who carried the show in Wichita? Topeka? Other markets?

I remember listening to AT40 on KEYN/Wichita in the early 70's (circa 1972 I think).

KEYN in Wichita ran American Top 40 in the 70's and in 1980. KLEO-AM had the show for a period in the mid 80's. I remember hearing it on the station in 1984, days before they switched to the Music Of Your Life. In Topeka, I remember hearing the show on 1250 WREN in Summer of 1980. However, the show was on WIBW-FM (and possibly AM) in the Summer of 81. I also believe I heard the show on KWHK in Hutchinson around 1980.

I recall KKRD also running an countdown show on sunday afternoons in the mid 80's. It might have been Rick Dees or Scott Shannons countdown and not AT40.

Yes, KKRD carried AT40 on Sunday afternoons from 1987 I think 1990. They stayed with the show after Shadoe Stevens took over. Before that, the original KSKU in Hutch carried AT40 until they became KZSN country in '86. There was actually a period of more than a year when AT40 wasn't heard in Wichita. I remember having to listen 84 WHAS out of Louisville on Sunday nights to hear Casey Kasem

Casey was on KEYN in Wichita in 1970, I believe. Came in on 10-1/2 inch reels before Watermark switched to LPs, and they had to be played by remote control from the two Ampex's in the basement production room of the little white house on W. Central.

KSKG in Salina (while they were still CHR) ran it in the early-mid 80's

KSKG ran it in the late 70s. I recall listening then. Probably 1978 onward.

WIBW-FM in Topeka, then known as "97 FM," ran it on Saturday afternoons, timing the No. 1 song to play right at 5. Not sure if that lasted until the switch to country.

KSRadio, I don't think KNDY would have run AT40 unless it was during its short stint at "Contempo 103," long before you were born. I still remember the only current Top 40 song that Herbie liked -- "Rock 'n' Roll is King" by ELO.
