Original Hot 97

I really think this music is so connected to me for life, with Original Hot 97 it feels so good to travel back in time to when I first discovered music on the radio. At age 8, that was WKTU when it debuted in 1996, and this reincarnation of that era is here again, almost exactly as it was. The best part is when they say some of the old liners between songs, such as "you're listening to New York's hot new music first" and then they play a dance song from 1996 or even 1987, you kinda forget what year it is, and its like you're hearing the song for the first time. I've been listening almost nonstop the past few days, it's really helped me thru some tough times this week...I'm blessed to have grown up near New York City, where this music prospered in the 90s...This comes just as close, hope you stay tuned in: Original Hot 97 on TuneIn: http://tun.in/seGSL

Thanks for the link - great music & imaging! Just heard this one: "The number you have reached, zee one hundred, is no longer in service. The new number is hot ninety seven. Please make a note of it." Ahh, the days of radio battles.

It's true that areas that had a station in this format back then were fortunate.

You can just play me the "From the toptoptoptoptoptoptop of the Empire State Building" and that will immediately take me back. Though I still remember when it was Hot 103 from the top of the World Trade Center before a frequency swap in the late 80s.
That was when Hot 97 occupied an antenna at the Empire State Building...<I believe that gave the station a 6700 watts.

The Original Hot 97 station is back as a tribute stream. Don't know the same person is involved who did the previous tribute stream but it sounds exactly the same with the Chuck Riley sweepers and stuff. Only the audio quality is sometimes annoying distorted. HOT 97 35th Anniversary Tribute Station - Free Internet Radio - Live365
I would like it to be on the HD2 of Hot 97
The question is...Will the station "siphon" the listeners from Hot 97 HD1 if it was put on HD2???

This is what made radio interesting...Fighting for the ratings.

I loved Hot 97 back in the mid 90's. My favorite was the "roll call" on the Ed, Lisa, and Dre morning show.
They started that in 1993. But the station "segued" to urban because they wanted to compete against the former WRKS 98.7 Kiss FM. That was a bad idea since the dance listeners were "up in arms"...They demanded a dance station and Evergreen brought back WKTU 103.5....<That station should go back to the station when it came back.....Minus disco.

Exactly the kinda station we've been missing...Like KTU in the late 90s
Very similar to the one a few years ago, which is just like the one from the late 1980s...
Hopefully other stations get the message...

I don’t think it would take listeners away from the current Hot 97. The format sounds completely different. It’s not like this is a throwback hip hop station that would take listeners from the current hip hop station.
This might actually take away listeners from KTU. Then again, so few people have HD radios even in 2021 that it’s negligible

I don't think a "fad format" rhythmic nostalgia station will siphon any listeners from today's hip-hop focused Hot 97. Maybe a few people would say "oh wow" for a couple of months, but I don't see it holding up in today's world. I don't think it would significantly impact KTU either. First, it would be a HD2...hello? Is anyone actually listening? Second, a narrowly focused "oldies" outlet won't last long against better programmed alternatives. Sure, KTU has some "throwbacks", but their playlist is more current/recurrent. The fan web stream or other online option seems like the most practical outlet for a format that isn't really commercially viable anymore.

I listen to the Hot 97 tribute station but the playlist is too tight for a nostalgia station I hear a lot of repeats the same tracks everyday like it's new music again. And still the annoying distortion 'clipping' sound on some tracks.
