Originality in radio....the lost art

Assuming since WDOK tried it a few weeks ago, WDJQ in Alliance is now "without a morning show".

Next they'll rebrand the morning show after a 70's Sitcom.

Sounds like a promotion to me, to catch attention. Oldest trick around.

Back in the early 1960's, top 40 WHK 1420 in Cleveland did a variation for a few weeks: they ran a robot-sounding-voice promotion (Harvey, I believe was the name of the station voice) and ran jockless. Supposedly the robot-voice took over the radio station. It got WHK and the old ownership Metro Media a LOT of local and radio industry publicity way back then.

In 1969 1360 WMCK Mckeesport [Pittsburgh Market Bought by owners of WIXY 1260] To WIXZ Switch. Used "Seque" A Robert That Never Makes Mistakes, Until "Wild Child" Dick Kemp And Other Live DJ's Took Over. Is That were The Idea Came From.

I remember WHK doing Harvey the robot around late winter or spring of 1967, unless they did an earlier one also. I always heard "Harvey" was the replacement due to a strike of some type.

Edit: I tried looking on Youtube and Google to see if anyone had an aircheck of this. Only reference I can find so far with a short search is a reference here in this interesting aircheck site:

http://www.ohio.edu/people/gulino/aircheck/oh_cleveland.html

Scroll down about half way to WHK, and there is a reference to Harvey at 4/67. I didn't read on how you can get or listen to the airchecks yet.

This isn't meant as a knock at DeLuca, who has achieved a certain amount of success while at Q..but what did you think you were going to get here? One of the previous morning shows, consisting of Cathy Vogel and Tim Richards, simply walked off the air a few years ago when their contract negotiations hit the final snag..

Did you think you were going to get billboards and stuff? Those days are pretty much over..only Clear Channel does that stuff..cause they own the damn things in the first place..

And why the hell are they still doing contracts at this place? Its Alliance Ohio for crying out loud..

DeLuca has been there for something approaching a decade..time to move on and see what else is out there..its not like he's a job hopper or anything..

How quickly they turn. Their reps are in overtime spin control. Saying they couldn't sell the morning show. Also spinning a one year non compete.

First, a non compete in Canton, Ohio?

Secondly, a year non compete in Canton, Ohio?

Now you say perhaps someone who signs a one year non compete in such a small market may never want to cross the street and eventually move on. True. If I were a perspective employer, I'd question their common sense for being so foolish.

Canton is a fine place, I love brick streets, and in fact I like most places where bricks were an important industry.
