OT/TV: Final Indians TV Deal Announcement

Everything has fallen into place as expected with the Indians' new TV deal, with WKYC/3 and Time Warner Cable:

<a target="_blank" href=http://ohiomedia.blogspot.com/2005/12/breaking-news-other-indians-tv-shoe.html>http://ohiomedia.blogspot.com/2005/12/breaking-news-other-indians-tv-shoe.html</a>

Highlights:

* 158 games total. 130 regular season and 8 Spring Training games on the new cable/satellite network, and the previously announced 20 over-air games on WKYC/3 and other over-air stations on the Tribe's new over-air TV network (Columbus, Youngstown/Warren, etc.? Those stations weren't announced today).

* Non-exclusive deal with Time Warner. Indians will go out and sell the games to other cable providers in their footprint, and to both satellite providers.

* Other Indians-related programming will be offered, though there's no mention of a 24/7 network at this point. (See the blog entry for more musings on that.)

* The Indians seem to expect "all" games to be in HDTV at some point, though note that only the WKYC over-air games are definitely announced as being in HD.

WKYC seems to be super-anal about HD-quality camera signals.

One wonders why there couldn't have been a traffic camera stuck up on the new LED billboards scattered about town - no HD signal available for their (WKYC's) air.

> I'm wondering of the production guys at WKYC have those ''Offical Indians Station'' promos in the can already..

The 158 games leaves four open dates, presumably for ESPN, which has the season opener Sunday night April 2, and whatever Fox and other Sunday Night Baseball games the Tribe might be assigned to..this means there won't be any holes in the schedule, as there was the final week on the season..the Sunday White Sox game that had no local T-V coverage..

I think the Comcast and other deals will go through when the F-C-C figures out it really can't regulate HBO, Sirus, et al..its been presumed that the recent problems are due to Alaska Senator Ted Stevens and his crusade to get bills passed upping fines and such..since those didn't make it out of committee before Christmas, a lot of stuff on hold may finally get done..

Should be interesting to see if any overtures are made to the Cavaliers, Barons, Cleveland State, Mount Union, various high school conferences, etc..if the Tribe wants to, they can make this a serious moneymaker in a couple of years..

Just a clarification - 158 games includes 8 Spring Training contests. 150 games in-season, with 20 of those on WKYC...

I can't remember how many Indians games FSN Ohio did last year, but I'm pretty sure it was lower than 158, even if by a small number. The Indians media folks are making a big deal out of this deal giving viewers the most number of TV games ever.

Sure you aren't confusing them with WJW FOX 8? :D I do know WKYC mentions their "digital broadcast center" in the newscast opens, but their over-air product is still SD. Only FOX 8 in this market has an HD news studio...one of a small handful at local stations nationwide.

Yet another reason you should read The Mighty Blog of Fun(tm) (link below)...we found a pretty interesting story about WJW's plans to upgrade its HD local production. They're pretty extensive. You may soon see what Big Chuck and Lil' John look like in HD...

The WKYC Indians telecasts will be the first non-news locally-produced HD programming in the Cleveland market.

If my memory is correct, the last few years FSN (when all the games have been on FSN) has showed 150 regular season games and 3 or 4 spring training games.
