OT - TV set went nuts...

My CRT bedroom tv set has freaked out. In a few words: The Blue Man Group is on all the channels, everyone is blue. ;D
B4 that the image was fine. It was a sudden issue. The set has about 8 years.
Does it worth a repair? ::)

You didn't say what size TV it is but assuming it is not a big screen it is most likely you can't even find a repair shop. And even if you could it would most likely be cheaper to replace it than repair, especially if it is an older model. Call around your local area and see though. Might be an old TV repairman who'd take a crack at it for cheap.

Assume it is a "tube"--that is, CRT TV; and something has gone south either with the CRT or the board that drives it. Hence your red and green is missing. If the TV got "bounced" may just be a loose connector, but doubt that it is that simple.

Second the suggestion above--ditch the TV and buy a new one. Cost of repair will be more than the cost of new set.

You may want to check the internet for bargains. Viewsonic (the monitor manufacturer) has been offering good discounts on small LCD TV's (example: 22 inch screen) that can also be used as a computer monitor.
Naturally not much value to you in Portugal,(I assume you have analog PAL/50 hz.--this has an American digital tuner) but we will see more deep discounts with the economy slowing down both in the EU zone and here.

Craigslist

Go to www.craigslist.org, click on the location closest to you and then click on free in the 'for sale' area.
You'll probably find people giving TV sets away for free there. If not, stuff sells cheap there. I bought a Hafler DH-200 100 watt/channel power amp there last week-for 25 bucks. They sell on ebay starting for over twice that, not to mention shipping.

I've been collecting infos here n'there and most of them drove me to: magnetized crt...
Searched for an "How to" without having to go to a tv-shop to do a demag burst and pay 40€...
Well, if I have a tape eraser why don't rub it on the screen? I have nothing to loose. Said and done!
[size=20pt]It worked!!! ;D

Fascinating! Many sets have a coil draped over the CRT that will degauss automatically when the set is turned on, then turn off --sounds like this degaussing coil or that circuit may have given up the ghost.

Interesting that the screen would be mostly blue--the old, old sets I've had that would get this problem usually would have "splotchy" color-- a red splotch here, a green one there, but normal color elsewhere on the screen.

Built a Heathkit TV many years ago. Could not get the colors right unless I swapped the RGB leads around. That worked briefly then the colors started shifting again. Borrowed a BIG degauser and the fixed it!

Ran & repaired that TV for 28 years untill I gave up on it & bought a 32" LCD.
All I have to say is WOW... What a difference.

Does not sound like a degausing problem, not if it's the whole screen, edge to edge. Likely a cold solder joint in the driver circuit board. Or a cathode - grid short, heater - cathode short. Time for a new set.

Used to see similar problems with computer monitors. Often, it was an eprom chip that went bad, and needed replacing. Don't know why hitting it with a big magnet worked, unless it vibrated the board enough to break up some oxidation on the eprom pins...
