OT: Windows XP issue

Since a lot you may still run XP, thought you might find this interesting and pass it along....I understand this does not affect Win7 or later but does affect Server 2000 and 2003 and ANY XP version...have not seen anything on Server 2008 being affected.........yet!

I reloaded XP on a HD recently....(clean reinstall...wiped drive)..After Automatic Updates downloaded and installed 240+ updates, I found I could not go MANUALLY to Windows Update....the page would display an 8Xxxxxxxxx error and would not show any updates....though I KNEW there were still plenty left..

BEEN trying every fix I could find.......FINALLY found out the simple (isn't it always???) fact.....MICROSOFT let the Certificate for the page expire on November 17th!!! SOOOO to get around the "problem" (Intentional????? HMMM especially since one group has claimed XP updates will be available through 2019 now IF you know how to get them!!!), simply turn OFF Windows Time Update in the PC clock, then set the date to November 16 or earlier....and VIOLA, you can see what updates you are missing!!! AFTER you get all updates downloaded and installed, reset clock and turn Internet time sync back on...AUTO Update will run in the background and download any NEW updates..I did this trick at 9PM tonight.....by TEN, I had MANUALLY downloaded 32 updates.....installed and reset clock and all is happy again.....

FYI!!!! M$ strikes again!!!!

Or just install Windows 8.1 - the fastest booting and shut down windows yet! Only install from the ISO image, NOT from the install DVD, because the install DVD won't let you keep programs and settings. I changed it to boot to desktop, and made all the start menu tiles small tiles with tool tips so it is effectively traditional start menu. Take THAT, metro interface!

Or, if you can hold out for Windows 10, just wait for that to come out. I've been playing around with the tech preview and it's superb. It's everything 8.1 is but you can use the traditional Start menu with the added benefit of tiles on the side -- in fact, depending on your hardware, it will automatically choose which UI to use, Metro or the original desktop (and yes, you can switch manually, too). In the meantime, 7 still works just fine.

I really like 8.1 now, it plays games smoother, boots up quicker I have installed classic start shell also to have more of a windows 7 interface. The thing I wish is that they would bring back gadgets. I liked those better then apps. The only problem I do not like about 8.1 they still have not fixed the shut down issue. Sometimes the computer stays on that happened to my work pc it was on all weekend.

Wait, you mean I need a stringed instrument to download the updates?

Bringing this back to radio - how does Windows 8.1 play with automation programs? I have yet to find any scientific application it won't handle - although an ME told me Solidworks won't run. I know there are a lot of new LPFM's out there running low end automation software, and I'd like to hear any stories people have.

Don't know about the windoze platform any more. I run Radiologik software on a Mac and it works well.

As far as Win 8.1 and automation, I don't know of a manufacturer that is recommending its use just yet. We just installed WO this year and its is currently only spec-ed for Win7/Server 2008R2. That said I have also not run in to much that would not run on 8.1 either.
I would guess/hope most LPFM folks would run win 7 to be sure their automation was a stable as it can be.

Just an FYI, the Windows Update certificate issue caused by M$ finally got fixed...You can actually manually go to M$update now...though AutoUpdate was downloading any critical updates in the background...

Now to see if the rumors about support to 2019 is true!

... provided you use Internet Explorer. Any other browser and you get a page telling you to use IE.
