The DVRPAL is the forerunner of the Channel Master unit but they are not quite the same. According to the DVRPAL forums the earlier units were prone to lockups and premature failure at a significant rate. There seem to be no such problems with the CM unit.

The difference in price is about $75 more for the CM unit which includes a one-year warrantee as opposed to the DVRPAL 90-day warrantee.
