Other sports networks out there

Since we've discussed the "imminent" death of Fox Sports Radio and Sporting News Radio, if these networks were to go under without a buyer to bail them out, what other networks could take their place and what would happen to their affiliates? The only other one I know is Sports Byline, but their choice of programming to me looks very poor to me.

I don't know if they ever have considered, but it would be nice Sports Illustrated would get in onto sports talk radio, just like their rivals ESPN and Sporting News have done.

Where does Sports Byline stand today in terms of affiliates? The official Web site's station list is woefully out-of-date.

When I worked in central Pennsylvania (1998-99), the AM news/sports station aired ESPN radio from 7-10p, followed by Sports Byline from 10p-5a. To me, SB USA is all Ron Barr -- the quality of most of the network's personalities falls dramatically if Barr is on vacation (which, from the time I worked there, appeared to be often.). I remember the station owner cringing more than once when he learned that Barr would be taking time off. FWIW, the station is now an FSR affiliate.

I liked Ron Barr as a host, although I haven't heard his show in about five years. His interview style and demeanor with callers was very old school and nothing like the screaming, yelling, etc. you hear on other shows, both on the local and national level. Is it still the same?

Clear Channel/Premiere is 10X bigger than ESPN radio/ABC. 10x bigger with names like Rush, Laura, Rome and Beck. Would you rather live in LA or that wasteland called Bristol and have to preview Sports Center every night?
You have no idea how successful FSR has been in only six years and to compare it to Sporting News shows how clueless you are. Ask Bruno if he would rather be back at FSR or with SNR?

As much as realdeal can be, well you know. He does have a point Premiere is owned by Clear Channel. If it wasn't profitable it would've been gone a long time ago. Sporting News being sold is a bit scary though. I personally think all 3 will be around for a long time or at least neither FSR or SNR are going anywhere.

The show is still the same and Ron is still a very good interviewer. It's a different type of show than the "other guys" offer. I'm pretty sure many of his affiliates are in smaller markets.

If you have access to Sirius they have his show on there.

I agree, CC is bigger overall, but the general public doesn't know a majority of what us radio geeks know. Ask the average guy/gal on the street to name a sports network and chances are the first words out of their mouth are "ESPN"

Different than "the other guys" with the exception of Bob Costas, Troy Aikman, and James Brown's shows.

Yes, the Costas & Aikman shows are once a week. Ron Barr's show is every night. James Brown's show isn't even on the Sporting News schedule anymore.

I thought Sports Byline was dropped by Sirius a while back..
