O'town Jan'13 Ratings

MIX peaks, Z is right behind. JRR inches up. DBO continues to tank, now even even lower than WMFE. Bring back Slats, please.\

RIP News Talk AM 580 WDBO, you have and will continue to be missed.

Anyone on this board an Arbitron subscriber?
If so, I'd like to know what rank WPRK is, if we even show up as a non-subscribing station.
No numbers, just rank.
I'm sure that is legal under the terms, right?

Email me: [email protected].
Subject line: "WPRK Arbitron"

Have any of you seen the actual Arbitron showing the target demo breakdown? If not, you need to keep in mind that the published public numbers you are reviewing are 6+ rankings which are essentially useless. WDBO is performing quiet well in its target demo and is far from "tanking".

WYGM and the new WDBO-AM are around 0.8-0.7 as usual.

WJHM is really circling the drain.

So basicly if a station servs feamales 18-24, if you didnt know the numbers for the people who are in that age range, the numbers we see mean jack?

I wonder what genius decided to screw up 102 jamz? If anyone was smart at cbs they would go back to the real 102 jamz and not this chr crap. If they wanted to do a chr then I don't think they should use the 102 jamz name. That is a heritage name in this market.

WJHM might be billing better as a rythmic based CHR then when they were straight up urban. It's easier to sell advertising on a chr then it is urban, so eventhough their ratings may be low, they may still be making more money with the current format especially if they're going after a certain demographic. WPLJ in New York is a perfect example. They are a hot A/C and the soccer mom's love them. Their overall ratings are almost never in the top 10 but what their billing makes up for it.

Urban is typically the lowest billing format in the industry.

WJHM can best be described as rhythmic CHR. The former terminology was known as CHuRban which is a hybrid CHR/Urban format.

You all bring up some good points I never thought of. I still say why not at least change the name or something? I'm just speaking for someone that has lived in this market all my life and I associate the 102 jamz with the old 102 jamz. Why not call it now like over in New York or whatever other names CBS has for formats like this? That way people are not thrown off. Unless CBS is using the heritage name to try to get listeners and get people's attention. That's why I don't work in radio. :) I'm just calling things at I see them.

If you'll remember though, when 102 Jamz launched under Jerry Clifton in '88 or so, they were actually a CHRurban/rhythmic CHR station, not really a true urban. So this is actually kind of a return to their true roots (for all us old folks who remember the early days of their format). They didn't evolve to a truly urban format until several years later in the 90s.

(Anyone else remember those old original 102 Jamz, Jerry Clifton sweepers from back in the day? -- "Don't touch that dial....there's jam on it.. 102 J-j-j-j-Jamz!" Lol! I've still got airchecks somewhere from them in '88 & '89).

I am noticing WPOZ HD-2 and HD-3 starting to make inroads into the ratings. Of course the ratings probably include their translators.

It's the translators. Only about 3 people in Orlando have an HD radio and know how to use it ;D Eventhough WPOZ's HD subchannels have a larger coverage area then the analog translator (not to mention as well as being on 88.3 they're also on 88.7 & 91.1's subchannels) there's alot more listeners who listen to their respective formats on either analog 95.9 or 106.3. Same goes for WMGF's HD-2 which is translated on analog 102.5. That one got a 1.4 in the last book. I will give the folks at WPOZ some props in that at least they are saying where to find the HD subchannels in the TOH ID unlike some other stations.

I was with the former CHR WDOQ Q 102 in the '80s. The station later became Transtar Format 41 adult contemporary Central Florida's WCFI I-4 101.9 and then the moniker was shortened to Sunny 102 before becoming classic rock WORZ. I remember well when WORZ Z 102 debuted as WJHM 102 Jamz during the Summer of 1988. The very first song on WJHM was Jam On It by the group Newcleus, played in a continuous loop. I thought that particular song was quite clever for a station being branded as Jamz.

As for why CBS has not re-branded 102 Jamz into something else, that is because 102 Jamz is well known, and to re-brand the station into someting else completely unknown will run the risk of losing advertising revenue and listeners resulting in lower PPM until new advertisers and listeners come on board. It's a matter of psychological imaging. If it becomes something else, psychologically in the general public's mind it's a completely new radio station even though the current format is the same. This is what the former WHTQ attempted to do, but in reverse, when it was re-branded from 96.5 WHTQ, The Classic Rock Station to simply 96 Rock even though the classic rock programming was virtually unchanged.

How did 1059 Sunny do this book? I notice they have tweaked their clock adding commercial free hours, etc. Is Rick playing catch up after a holiday slump? Either way, it's still the best sounding station around. I was in Tampa over the weekend and listened to some Q105. No comparing the two, Sunny is the better station.
