Ottawa--91.9?

Any idea of what kind of broadcast area it covers, Yez?

Some speculation on digitalhome.ca forums suggest he's running a kW or two into a vertical dipole. He's covering about a 30 km radius -- from the east end of Ottawa over to Franktown in the west, Gatineau north of the Ottawa River to Kemptville in the south.

I can get him about 12 miles away very easily on a Superradio II, and I can even get him (barely, though) on my cell phone's FM radio. He's sending out RDS as well.

The Spectrum Management Branch of Industry Canada is reserving comment on the next steps they'll be taking.

the front page of this site says reports he's running 2.3kw...and has
put about $80,000 into the station.
14 years old with that kinda money to spend?
hope he's saved some to pay the fines...if he stays on the air, they're coming.

Yeah, that would be his father forking out the money, I gather.

If he or his father had applied for a license with the CTRA, he wouldn't have been forced to close.

But in my opinion, give the teen a break. At least he is playing requested material that commercial radio would pass over.

Been away from the boards for a while...He's broadcasting from his father's restaurant in the south side of town. Apparently he's made it blo0dy impossible for CBC radio one (91.5) to be heard in a certain section of town. It's basically hot 89.9 without commercial and is nothing to write home about. The signal apparently is quite go0d, although here in my interference plagued downtown location the only radio that can get it is the cc radio plus...and depending on the location in the ro0m..the signal strength goes from 0 on the meter to 4.

both CBC and CTV have given news time to him, so the whole city knows now.....and CBC showed his signal bleeding over 91.5 on a car radio at an intersection. That's probably how he got caught.

It's almost impossible for anyone to get a licence.
Industry Canada might stand behind him in saying "you can have a licence, but not on that frequency..." Most likely because it IS causing interference with CBC radio.

This whole situation is getting to be about as annoying as Prostitition.
I'm not trying to be for or against such a thing, but they get the same treatment in some provinces and states. "You can do it if you have a permit" Then they refuse to issue permits for the hookers.

This is something far safer than the world's oldest profession and there is no excuse for not letting the kid do his thing.

I'd love to see something like this go on in a place like Niagara falls, where it would be difficult to proove wether or not the station is broadcasting from the States or Canada. :D
(He could have used 100.3 FM there!)

He was shut down on Friday morning by the RCMP and Industry Canada.  They also seized all his equipment (bye, bye $120 000 inheritance).  Apparently he also threw a massive hissyfit over it too complete with tears and everything.  He refused to tell the cops where his gear was so they shut down the power to the whole hotel complex to shut him down.

Story: http://www.ottawacitizen.com/news/RCMP+raid+teen+pirate+radio+station/2446382/story.html

I was rather surprised to learn that his ERP was just shy of 3200 watts.  I tuned into it in my car the night before he was shut down and started to get signal fade at roughly 13 miles (as the crow flies) northeast from his antenna.  That's not bad.

(I think I can reasonably assure you both the Department of Communications and FCC have the technology to prove quite quickly which side of the border a pirate is on!)

(and both organizations would probably be delighted to have a chance to prove it in Niagara Falls, but not in January!)

One such known example was on the US / Mexican border, involving a pirate in Nuevo Laredo -- the station implicated that they can be anywhere, and for good reason:

Not that I'm aware of. Wouldn't that be hard to pull off with CHUO sitting on 89.1 though?
