Ottawa 99.7 and 101.9 FM

It was a go0d idea. The formats and applications that were awarded to both frequencies were bad choices. CIIO which currently is on 99.7 had sought a power increase so they would become a protected station. Since it is the city's official information source in the event of an emergency, that should have had more weight than another soft rock/ac station. We already have enough of those. The applications for 101.9 were very interesting, they would have added much more diversity to the dial. ¿Why shouldn't the Gatineau side have their own communty radio station? Those applicants have reapplied (wisely). Personally I wanted Corus to get a news talker on the station. I don't like CFRA that much, although there are a couple of decent hosts. I would like to have heard Charles Adler in Ottawa, and the ratings support that both CFRA and Radio 1 have 40% of the anglo audience, although I would prefer the talk going to an AM frequency. FM is to0 problematic in the downtown neighbourho0ds.

My guess is the CRTC will re-grant those licenses to Astral and Frank Torres, plus give the go-ahead to the Gatineau Community Station (I assume it was this group that launched the initial complaint). That way everyone is happy.

I’m glad that these properties are up for reconsideration again, but I fear Astral will get the 99.7 frequency. I still stand by my prediction that, had 99.7 been in the works at the time of the “Virgin” mania, Astral would have waited to launch a Hot AC “Virgin” on 99.7. I still think that was the original plan. However, inconveniently, just before the “Virgin” launch, 99.7 was pulled away from Astral Media. I believe that Astral wanted “Virgin” on in Ottawa at any cost. So, they abruptly put “Virgin” on 106.9, instead.

When Astral was awarded the license for 99.7 last year they claimed the new station would launch with a female oriented AC format and be branded as EVE FM.

Similar story with 89.9 though. They were supposed to be launched as "the Planet", but became Hot 89.9 instead.
