Ottawa re-approvals plus one

In August, 2008 two new FM stations were approved for Ottawa. Astral got the go ahead for a new female oriented AC station on 99.7 (Eve FM) and Frank Torres was granted a Blues station on 101.9 (CIDG-Dawg FM). One of the applicants that was rejected, Radio De La Communaute Francophone D'Ottawa, which had proposed a French language Community station for Ottawa was so incensed with the CRTC decision that they launched a complaint with the Federal Government insinuating that the CRTC was prejudiced towards minority groups.

Last Fall the Feds overturned the decision and ordered the CRTC to reschedule the hearing with a more open mind towards minority interests. Well, one year later this whole shemozzle has finally come to an end. The applications by Astral and Frank Torres were re-approved today, plus the French Community group got their way and will also be putting their station on the air.

The French community group got a sweet offer they really should consider. Corus still has a fully functional 50 thousand watt AM transmitter at 1150. They offered it to the French group plus offered to take care of the costs for 3 years. Being in the city I can vouch for 1150's great signal quality. There are not going to be the downtown overload issues that FM gets here, nor are there going to be building penetration problems with 1150. I've worked and been in many downtown office buildings. 1150 had NO problem being heard. In my own office building, Very little FM gets in there unless you're near a window. I can get a better signal from 3 Montreal AM's than I can with local FM.

If I were them I'd take it. They only have 2 months to find an alternative to their proposed 101.7 frequency.

Mimo.....do you know if the offer for 1150 is still on the table, or was it conditional only if Corus got the go ahead for their proposed News-Talk station on 101.9, which of course was denied.

I don't know any more than you do. I think Corus wanted to offer it to them regardless of whether they were approved or not. At least that's what I got out of the decision. They also offered to pay for an FM flip in 3 years.

Personally I was hoping for a news talker on FM (if only for Charles Adler and maybe Coast To Coast). As much flack as they've had from people over the years, I thought they did a great job with CINW in Montreal as a talker. Some of that flack was deserved, but we need someone to challenge CFRA. I think that corus should have just re-applied for 1150 and flipped it to english talk. I doubt that would have been allowed. I also don't approve of flipping CJRC to FM just to switch it to music. The French here deserve a news/talk voice as much as the English.

Don't forget that the Ottawa market still has go go by the older CRTC regs for FM radio.

Plus, the rules for news and information on FM are still very much restricted pretty much anywhere in Canada anyway.

Should the new EVE FM (99.7) change their name to Virgin Radio and the current Virgin Radio switch the name back to the Bear?

I'd love to see that happen, but I have my doubts.
