In August, 2008 two new FM stations were approved for Ottawa. Astral got the go ahead for a new female oriented AC station on 99.7 (Eve FM) and Frank Torres was granted a Blues station on 101.9 (CIDG-Dawg FM). One of the applicants that was rejected, Radio De La Communaute Francophone D'Ottawa, which had proposed a French language Community station for Ottawa was so incensed with the CRTC decision that they launched a complaint with the Federal Government insinuating that the CRTC was prejudiced towards minority groups.
Last Fall the Feds overturned the decision and ordered the CRTC to reschedule the hearing with a more open mind towards minority interests. Well, one year later this whole shemozzle has finally come to an end. The applications by Astral and Frank Torres were re-approved today, plus the French Community group got their way and will also be putting their station on the air.
