A discussion for fans of the all-Christmas format...

WNUW- Who is programming this thing?! After a shaky start during which they spun the tiniest playlist for way too long, 97.5 has completely knocked my socks off. I think they may have more titles in rotation than B101 which is surprising considering they're the new kid on the block. Somehow their rotation of tried-and-true titles is just clicking and flowing better than what I'm hearing from the other guys. Perhaps it's because they've managed to add some new-but-not-annoying records by artists like Sara Bareilles and Colbie Callait. Within the past week, the only time I've tuned away was during a commercial or when they play that damn Drifters song again. (Seriously. Stop.) I like that they're playing Barry Manilow's version of "Jingle Bells" and "Santa Bring My Baby Back To Me" by Elvis. I would like for them to play some of the stuff Sunny introduced me to like Aretha's "Winter Wonderland" and Barbra's "Jingle Bells" but beggars can't be choosers! Speaking of Sunny (and everyone knows what a huge fan I was): 97.5's version of all-Christmas has gone far beyond any expectations I'd had for someone ever swooping in to fill the gaping hole that opened up when Sunny went away.

WOGL- My second choice because I love the deep library and the on-air presentation (jocks, etc.). When I turn them on, it usually takes a long time before I make my way back to 97.5. In fact, having the opportunity to flip between 97.5 and 98.1 presents a surprisingly low probability of ever having to tune to B101. (WOGL's flip to all-Christmas--in conjunction with 97.5 already doing the format--may be what has put such a smackdown on B101's 12+ and 25-54 numbers.)

WJBR- Their version of the format is just plain interesting. I can't listen to it for too long because the quirks of being in a small market sometimes get a little too quirky...but it certainly gives them some leeway the other guys can't take advantage of. I think they're the only station where I've heard The O'Jays "Christmas Just Ain't Christmas (Without the One You Love)" this year and I don't know why. It's a perfectly great Christmas song which would sound awesome on whatever station plays it. I've also had to run and look up what I was hearing when stuff came up by artists like LeAnn Rimes, Extreme, Billy Squier(!), and an apparent Christian Rock group called MercyMe. (I do wish WJBR would drop "Hands" by Jewel. I get that she recorded a Christmas-y version of the song but it's just never going to be a Christmas song! Try Bette Midler's Christmas version of "From A Distance" instead. Good stuff and undeniably Christmas!)

WBEB- Just as dreadful as they've always been. Why, why, why, why, why do they insist on playing Jimmy Eats World's version of "Last Christmas"? The world was fine without it and I have never heard anyone else play it. And Jessica Simpson singing "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" with the obnoxious Rosie O'Donnell? Why? Seriously. What's the point? And who is Restless Heart? I'd like to give B101 points for playing Aretha's "Winter Wonderland" (which they never played while Sunny was, as far as I remember) but the whole station is just unlistenable. I've sampled them now and again but it's just awful. Sounds just like last year, which granted got them a 17-share but that was by default. They needed to bring their A-game (or come up with one) this year but they didn't. This is a fine example of B101 resting on its laurels. This year, I think they're gonna get bit in those laurels! Next year, I'd like to see one of two things from B101: Do the format right or leave it to 97.5 and 98.1. In fact, I'd be amused but not surprised if B101 returned to their regular AC format before Christmas this year. I think it's best for all involved!

WHAT- yes.com shows me what they're doing and I like it. But even with my obvious disdain for B101, AM 1340 loses by default. I simply can't hear them most of the time. And when I can, it's in glorious AM mono with an 80% chance of "flurries" (a.k.a. interference).

You forgot WXTU's HD2 channel, as well as KYW's "SantaTrax" Internet stream...

Soon Yi CIV.V, I completely agree with your analysis. Minus the Sunny jingles and airchecks, listening to WNUW is pretty much like listening to WSNI. I absolutely love it! I emailed their Program Director letting him know how much my family has been enjoying 97.5's Christmas music, and he sent a very kind email back thanking us for listening, as well as saying they hope to make it a yearly tradition. I had never even heard of NOW 97.5 until they flipped to all-Christmas on Halloween...I'm a pretty faithful WOGL and WBEB listener, but I'll definitely be keeping the dial on WNUW even after the Christmas music ends to check out what they have to offer when it comes to AC.

I'm so glad B101 has some competition this year.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Out of the Philly all-Christmas stations, I mostly listened to Now 97.5 since that's the only one I get (when a pirate on 97.5 is off the air). B101's covered up by CBS-FM, WOGL has interference from Magic 98.3, WHAT doesn't come in. When I'm closer to Philly, I listen to Now and WOGL. Every year when I tuned into B101, they always disappointed me. Seriously, Jessica Simpson is not Brenda Lee.

To Soon: You posted:"I think they're the only station where I've heard The O'Jays "Christmas Just Ain't Christmas (Without the One You Love)" this year and I don't know why." It's because that song is an R&B staple, and now that WDAS-FM has more syndicated programming than I would care for, that song and others don't get the spins they used to receive.

My opinion is that I would gladly listen to any mainstream pop or rock station that played no Xmas music (and promoted itself as such)... ;D

Ben-FM to the rescue. ;D

That aside, as I scan the dial now that it's mid-December, I generally don't perceive a difference from a casual/background listening standpoint (and I mean this in all seriousness) between Now and the B. I don't listen to either for more than about 30 minutes in a row. As an example, last weekend, doing the last of my leaf raking for the year, I alternated between Ben, the B and Now on my iPod radio adapter gizmo. Never mind that jumping from Def Lepperd to an Air Supply Christmas tune is comical in its own right, but I heard the old time songs on the B (Bing et al) and newer ones on Now. Just one person's perception, and I'm not going to sit and analyze Yes playlists to see how many versions of Winter Wonderland someone is spinning.

As a general rule, when I listen to Christmas, I like a mix of the best-known all-time versions with versions (or original material) by the artists I've grown up with.

Likewise, I'm glad to see Soon Yi clarify why B101 is so bad and 97.5 so much better. To my untrained ear, all 4 stations sound maddeningly alike, so it's interesting to know there are some subtle differences.

But what did Sunny do to warrant such high praise? I remember the Holiday Shopping Tips, but that was comparable to B101's Ask The Experts (which I find too cloying) and the Christmas movie soundbites on Now. (Or do I have them backwards?) I don't recall Sunny having a particularly bigger playlist, other than maybe a song or two like John Tesh's "We Fall Down."

Something I really do miss, though, is hearing those "Stories of Christmas" from years ago on the old WPEN and "The Customs of Christmas" on the old WRDR Unforgettable 104.9. Those were the commercial wraparounds about a minute long featuring the origin of various Christmas traditions and legends. Just for fun, I did the survey on B101 and suggested they bring these back.

One thing about having so many Christmas stations (and add Sirius-XM's Holly channel to the mix)... By now, the repetitiveness of the limited playlists allows you to immediately identify every song on the first note, so you can just hit the scan button right away before you even get the chance to be annoyed by the irritants; then just scan back when you hear that same irritant again a few minutes later.
