...go out to the family, friends, and co-workers of Traffic.com - Dallas Operations Manager John McCarty who died last night. A lot of people in the business know, or know of, John. For the last several years, John has been the backbone of the Dallas office.

John was one of those folks that had a passion for this business of broadcasting. Even those of us that didn't speak to, or see, John everyday could tell instantly that he was a "people person" and that he had a real love for the business and what he was doing.

I'm sure information on any services planned for John will be forthcoming soon.

I heard this just minutes ago from another source. So sad. John was a pro and a great guy.

He will be missed!

I just spoke with a friend of mine, outside of broadcasting, who has known John for a few years and he tells me John was outside in the yard yesterday afternoon doing some yard work. When he finished, he came in the house complaining of not feeling well and soon collapsed. His wife, Kim, called 911 and the paramedics showed up quickly. They tried to revive him for quite a period of time. After no success, they rushed him to North Hills Hospital in North Richland Hills where they worked on him for near an hour with no luck. John was 55.

John was definitely one of the good guys.

We're in complete shock here at the traffic office. It just hasn't sunk in yet. John was a great boss and friend, and we'll miss him dearly. We don't know yet what happened, but it appears to have been sudden.

Please keep his wife and kids in your prayers. John's pride and priority in the world was his family.

Jim Thomas and I were just having a conversation about John on Saturday, about when John did Jim's traffic on KAAM in the 1980s. John had a great career on the air here, at KLUV, Star 105 and Young Country, and later with the ABC Radio Networks doing an oldies show on Saturday nights.

John was the person who restored my faith in radio people. I cannot believe he is gone.

What a shock. I'm stunned and truly saddened. John used to fill in for me at ABC whenever I was off. He would run the "Best of" shows. He was a friend and one of the finest people I've known. I am absolutely in shock by the news. Rest in peace, my friend

I am right there with everybody else on John's passing. Too soon, and so unexpected. If there was anybody who made my miserable mornings brighter it was John when he was my traffic anchor when I worked at KTLR in Terrell. He was an eternal optimist. -and he was right, I DID get out of there, and went on to much bigger things.

I recall dropping by the Metro studios once a week or so driving back from Terrell to Bedford. John, Eric Kauffman, Hal King and a few others would be there.

One time I recall Hal getting on John for goofing off and not filling out affidavits. John responded back to Hal: "Holman, I can do that anytime, but how often do you get a chance to break the inter-office record of 22 hoops in wastepaper basketball!"

When you get down to it, he really was the best at what he did, and certainly earned his name at the top of the heap. You had your great jocks, you had your great news guys, your great PD's, and if there was one single voice and personality associated with D/FW traffic on the radio, It was McCarty.

I miss him already.

Somebody please e-mail me with service info. [email protected]

John thought so much of Hal King. He was so upset when he found out after the fact that Hal had passed away.

This reminds me so much of your situation not so many years ago, Josh...like your dad, John was the strong patriarch of a family that was very proud of him, and a guy who was loved by so many people who either listened to him or worked with him.

Very, very sad news indeed. :(

I'm no expert, but it sounds to me like he might have suffered a heat stroke.

Y'all take it easy if you're working outdoors!

Still nobody knows just yet what happened. John had bypass surgery about 5 years ago, had his gall bladded removed about 3 years ago, and had to take multiple shots of insulin every day to keep his out-of-control sugar numbers down.

Wow. I am shocked. Just found out and I don't know what to say. John was the guy who hired me for my first job in traffic and one of the nicest people I have ever known. He will be missed.

If you'd like to send condolences in the meantime, email to [email protected]. We'll make sure the family and co-workers get them. Thanks to all for your kindness.

Ironic you bring up my *situation* as I was talking with Andy Waldrop about that this morning when I got the news. I was reminded of the last time I saw John. It was at my Dad's funeral. He was as undone as any of my immediate family members. Me, Holly, Tiffany and Joey were so touched. Dad was very fond of John, and Jay Walker. They had so much fun doing the morning show at KSNN.

Anybody know of Jay's whereabouts? * I am speaking of the Jay Walker that worked at KSNN, KEGL, and <I think> WLS.

Heat stroke is nothing to take lightly. You need to hydrate frequently if you are working in the heat. My daughter had to work 9 1/2 hours in 120 degree heat on the outdoor set of a TV show. They had her, the cast, the crew, and all of the cast parents drink a bottled water every 20 minutes. Nobody went to the bathroom - you sweated it all off. One crew member forgot to drink and had to be airlifted to the hospital. One of the extras collapsed but didn't have to go to the hospital - but they were done for the day, too weak to stand. If that can happen to a healthy teenager - it can sure happen to someone older.

I want to personally thank each and every one of you for all the kind words about my Father. He will truely be missed! I saw that their was some speculation on how this happened and nobody knows yet. I will keep all of you informed as soon as we know something. Thank you again for all your kind words, they really mean alot!

This is really shocking news...does anyone know what happenned???

John and I talked or exchanged emails about every 6mos. The last time i spoke to him we talked about our Diabetes and how important it is to stay on top of it. I don't know what happened to John but for those of you with Diabetes please keep it in check. It's a killer if you don't.

My prayers and condolences to the McCarty family.

RIP John we'll miss you!

I've never written message one on these boards until today... and it is to simply say this:

John McCarty was a hell of a man... he had talent, he had class, and he was more than just a great boss... he was a good friend. John would go to bat for his employees all day long, he would practically invent a position if he knew it would help out a fellow jock who needed the work, and he was a REAL human being... something that there is not nearly enough of in this business today! John truly loved his family, but he saw a lot of us as being in his extended family, and he extended that love to us all.

I can't even begin to tell you how much I will miss him. I don't think I have had a tear in my eye since I left the Persian Gulf, but my eyes are full of them today... John, go in peace, and know that you have made many of us better broadcasters - and better people - because of your influence!

Laura and I love you, and miss you dearly!

My Colleague John McCarty

Being extremely moved by Monte's posting - it inspired me to register so I could first, announce my deepest condolences for the McCarty family but also express how much I will miss John.

I was fascinated when I first met John because I recognized the voice...and I got that twinge of meeting a local celebrity ...he was made for the busioness he very muched reveled in - how fortunate I was to have come to work with him for the past 8 years ...his is a voice we all will miss hearing, he is a friend I will miss seeing...

It was very obvious to witness the respect, admiration and appreciation shown to him by those that worked with him on a daily basis.

John was a close comrade of mine in the office and we shared many laughs and chuckles at the day to day of the goings on at the office. John was a guy you wanted to be associated with becuase you knew he was a man of charachter, values, morals and humor...his latest gimmick was saying an exagerrated "WOW"
as many of us in the office have been witness to...

John, you got the last "WOW" my firend...I will miss you and always remember you and the things we shared...my heart goes out to your family and friends you have left behind.

Rest in peace and watch over us.

Bob Smith

Stunned, shocked, sad....John was a great guy. From working with John at KEWS to working for him at Traffic.Com, he was always upbeat, positive and a real pro. More than that...he was a friend.

We'll miss him.
