Our Talk Radio has become Worthless..

The Control, over talk radio and political Correctness has killed Providence talk.. Back in the day, you had Flame in the pipes, now just smoke.
Rebecca Berger and Dee Dequatro with childish weekend talk shows.. Gene 'Cover 10 news azz Valicenti' ? Are you kidding me ? !
What type of jerk puts a news wanker on to do a talk show?
Then we have the main parts of the 'smoke'. The whole wpro line up. Now, I'm excluding Buddy, because Buddy is not and never was an 'Advocate' . Buddys there to make money and I think he's admitted that.
I'm talking about the rest of them. All afraid to go after the people in this state , by name, who have harmed it. If you listen to the different shows, it's not that the hosts don't want to go after 'the bad guys'. It's management. You can tell it's the programer and general manager... Back in the 'hey day' of talk, People were named, groups were gone after and s--t was stirred up, now it's just ,This Topic this hour, this topic the next hour. Talk radio has become Worthless. It used to be Entertainment and Alot more. Now, it's just Entertainment and 31 minutes of Ads. How sickening is that?

I honestly only care about one local host in this market. Matt Allen. The dude is funny. If you listen to Newsradio in this state with the intent of trying to learn something, you are going to end up very disappointed. It's all just a bunch of angry people with agendas. The real news gets lost in the mix. So you are better off just listening for entertainment. Not many hosts around here are entertaining. That's for sure. However Matt makes me laugh every time I tune him in. If you want to know my honest opinion, I think the guy is to talented for this market.

Skynet, I listen to Matt and I feel the programmer is sitting right next to him, with a gun at his head. I agree Matt show should be somewhere else.
I don't find it entertaining to have hosts afraid to talk about topics of race, illegals, felons, etc and taking an ongoing stand or stands. Imean, if I want to be 'entertained', I can listen to pro fm or something goofy.. I think the word Goofy applies here. Talk radio has become Goofy, instead of Hard hitting and provacative. The controling nature of wpro's talk is sufficating. Matts show has a segment on Fridays called the "open Forum'.Like a special gift to the listeners God in Heaven, thats what talk radio was Open Forum, until controling Program Directors and GMs started to direct everything. Look at Depetro. Once as hard hitting and relentless as they come, now he's Entertaining, with 'Tara'. What a waste of his abilities. I think thats the point, wpro stiffles, the talent they have. That Sucx, for the talent and the listener.

There's a good reason why talk radio in this market, and WPRO in particular is the way it is.

WPRO has a virtual monopoly on the talk radio format, and appear to be fairly successful......so why would they even consider doing anything any differently?

It's been this way for some years now....and only got worse when Clear Channel carried out thier infamous "Christmas Massacre", when they gutted WHJJ of any personell who were making ANY money at all.

Now......this is what we're left with. Who's out there to give 'PRO any competition?.......(sound of crickets chirping).......Yeah...I thought so.

If Sherm Strickhauser and Steve White were alive to see what talk radio's become.......It'd kill 'em. ;)

Dighton - You rock son ! hundred % right.

Poor Matt, (filling in for Buddy) just for the 8 th time (I kid you not) said to a caller (Joe from Cranston ) stick to the question, answer the question. Thats the programmer telling Matt to make everything a question. So in the middle of a caller speaking, the caller is 'corrected' and guess what,, it ruins the FLOW of the show. Man, I wish I could get wor or wbz .

North Kingstown.

You should be able to pick up both without a problem. You might need a new radio. Your location is pretty much right inbetween both stations. No reason that you shouldn't be getting them.

No Skynet, You can't get wor or wbz in NK,,no way... I live here. wor and wbz have way too much interferance.

It is really is your radio then unless you live right next to a Business that uses electrical tools non-stop. Then I could understand the interference part. You don't have to listen to me though. Someone else will tell you that in your location you should definitely be able to receive both WOR and WBZ at your place in North Kingstown. Go ahead... someone tell him. ;D

What kind of radio are you using? Try this one instead. This thing is great at pulling in signals. I get WBZ and WOR without a problem.

PS. Both stations stream and you can still listen to them over the internet.

With a decent AM radio, during the day you can hear WBZ almost anywhere in eastern New England, and WOR almost anywhere in southern New England. You're in south-eastern New England. Do the geography.

I bought a Sangean HD receiver with the crummiest AM reception I've ever heard. Everything on AM is unlistenable except for two (out of three) local stations. And yet my cheap Radio Shack portable picks up all sorts of distant stations. Go figure.

Even if you don't want to purchase a new radio, just experiment with the one you've already got. Most AM antennas are internal. So chances are all you need to do is physically turn your entire radio until the stations come in, or put the radio somewhere else like a window sill. Clock radios generally have crappy reception. Most other radios should work fine.

I did have a girlfriend once who had real crappy AM reception at her house. But she was located smack in the middle of a heavy industrial area In Warwick. Her house was literally surrounded on all sides by factories. So all that power equipment messed up lots of signals. But that was a unique situation. I am sure you can pull in more signals than you think you can.

I have the Grundig G8 which gets great AM/FM reception for it's size. It lists for around $70, but it occasionally goes on sale for $30 - $50 at Amazon and RadioShack often. The CCrane CCRadio-2, RadioPlus, Radio-SW, and the Sangean PDR-D5 are also all highly rated radios for their AM/FM reception, but are also a little more expensive. There is also a new CCrane EP which is analog and supposed to mimic the GE SuperRadio. I would stay away from anything with a HD receiver right now if long distance reception is your primary goal - most HD tuners out right now aren't known for superior reception, either digital or analog.

I've worked with both the GE and Sangean (CCrane) radios in extreme rural Alaska and find their sensitivity approximately equal. If anything, I give the GE SuperRadio a slight edge but there seems to be wide variability from set to set. The major criticism of the Sangean is that the digital display does not work at temperatures much below 0 degrees (F) and, even at moderate temperatures, has poor life expectancy. Not a problem when you can get only one station and just leave the radio set to it but somewhat inconvenient otherwise.

A good addition for sensitivity is a loop antenna like "SelecTenna" that Crane sells but anyone handy with assembly can make up a loop with a variable capacitor and proximity-couple it to either radio for even better reception. Thing is, in a noisy RF environment, it'll also boost the noise signal.

I also have two GE Super Radios...a model II from the mid 1980's that plays beautifully, which I would use more...except for the fact that the "on-off" button has been broken for years....thankfully...stuck in the "on" position.

I also have a newer model III from the early 1990's, which has the annoying problem of constant drifting on AM...which requires constant re-tuning. What a pain in the you-know-what.

So...towards the end...quality control was the thing that did the Super-Radio series in.

Agreed, Matt is too good for local talk. Then, Matt would be ruined as he is open minded, not of the extreme conservative, nor liberally bent.

He would not fit into a pocket and perhaps would not do well. Then, again, perhaps Matt's of the world may be a needed commodity in the Talk show World.

Matt is not dogmatic, can talk on a multitude of topics, and many of his topics are great.

Matt can host a show in any city and it will still be good. He has a distinct advantage over Cianci and Yorke. If you took them out of Rhode Island they would be completely lost. They wouldn't even know what to talk about.

More thoughts about your comments. I wonder if this is why Dan Yorke seems to damm bored, frustrated at times.

He wants to get into the issues, but , due to management is not allowed.

Oh, Rebecca 's program, boring, do not listen. Do not care about so called idiot stars or movies.

What I do care about are out Military in Afghanistan, being shot at, not being able to defend themselves. Injuries are moutnting, yet, we have idiot radio programming about stars, movies.

I feel for the men and women who are in Afghanistan , the country needs to talk about this, talk hosts if they believe in ending the war need to begin the movement. Not the simple minded talk about stars.

Matt is great. He makes every topic interesting. Before going f/t. On his weekend show. He devoted a full segment on his love
for graham crackers & milk as cereal. With regards to Rebecca. Her show is basically filler. Citadel probably does not have to pay her anything extra, as she is in the building f/t anyway..
