all comments right on the money about the River. Sad, but true....

before posting this, I listened to Bob Stuart....used to work with him in the mid 90's......its been at least four years since I last heard him, and honestly, his breaks are still the same. Boring. Which means he's still perfect for the River, who's management has never been known for promoting or encouraging talent growth. In fact, the only thing progressive about the River is its music, and even that's open for debate.

I'd say the River continues to penny-pinch in hiring its next PD, and fills the PD/morning show seat with someone already in-house. Which is bad news, as no one on their staff is qualified to help the River fill the tremendous AAA opportunity vacated by BOS in their flip.

I find The River to be a great relief after coming back from travels around the US and hearing the junk on the air in many other markets. Remember - WXRV is, at its core, a North Shore/Southern New Hampshire radio station; it doesn't have the signal to cover the Boston Metro (esp. heavily populated Norfolk and southern Middlesex counties) effectively. Thus, it cannot generate the raw ratings that a station like 'BOS could. Thus, the revenues won't come and budgets are tight.

As to Bob Stuart - I worked with him, too, in the late '80s/early '90s. He's a terrific guy and serves as an anchor for XRV. He's not boring - he's consistent and he knows what his station is all about.

These locally-owned, independent sticks just outside of big markets have a real challenge - another favorite of mine is WRNR in Annapolis/Grasonville, MD. These guys could be faulted in similar ways to XRV - but they consistently deliver decent radio.

It's a revolving door.

Except, for some reason Bob Stuart, who's been there forever.

Bob Stuart is excellent at what he does there. A great fit.

I heard Thats The Way Of The World-Earth, Wind and Fire on The River just a little while ago before the Hourly Legal ID. All I got to say is WOW!

That was the Sunday "Brunch By The River" show, 10 AM to Noon. It's an eclectic weekend specialty show that plays music and genres (R&B, jazz, blues, World, etc...) that they don't normally play in their weekday rotation.

Why so impressed by hearing "That's The Way Of The World"? Great song, but it's in frequent rotation on AC, classic hits, adult hits and oldies stations. I guess it's an unusual song for a AAA station, but it was during a specialty show.

Whats his name had already played Somewhere Over The Rainbow, I had not realized that it was still within his show. It was just great to hear the song on a Triple A station instead!

Why the Bob Stuart bashing? He's a great guy for that station and good at what he does. Why not give the man his credit. He obviously is well liked within his circle, as well as outside.

I recall listening to Bob Stuart back on Z-1260, WEZE-AM in 1973 when they were doing a Top 40/Oldies hybrid format, which was very good for its time. Stuart did afternoons, and later on evenings. He was a very competent jock in those days too...

folks, I wasnt bashing or insulting Bob. I like Bob very much, in fact, I learned a lot about radio from him when I was there. You should hear his Detroit demos - Bob made some real good radio. A completely different guy than the one who is in Haverhill right now.

I suppose by saying 'boring' I implied that Bob was a bad jock, which is not true. By 'boring' I meant that his style and delivery haven't changed in 10 years, which, as I said, is perfect for the River. If I had to listen to one jock, any jock, perform the same way every shift, I'd probably not listen to that jock after a while.

the point I was trying to make is that the River has never encouraged its jocks to be anything more than talking heads - "whatever the liner card says, read it". those who worked there and were frustrated by that type of airchecking have left the station. those who are content have stayed. Its really that simple.

The cool thing about hearing That's the Way of the World is that just before and after it you hear cool old jazz tunes like Miles Davis or some deep track from Jeff Beck. I think that "Brunch" is a great show.

Yeah, but there's a story going around that that's not why he's gone. Supposedly he did something very inappropriate.

Well.....?

yeah...well...? :)

The story going around is that he was buck naked in the air studio.

those things happen....

If this is true, it's quite hilarious. I'll take a guess and figure he would do his morning show in the buff and get dressed when people arrived at the station. I'm sure the studio is somewhere out of sight so I can't imagine how or if he got caught. Shame he didn't work at FNX, he would get a raise, it's obviously funnier than anything that their show does. How about the other jocks who probably all share the same "air chair" gross!

Oh and I'm probably better than he was, never heard him though.
