In my travels on the internets, I came across a story about a radio station in Alabama that's going to unusual lengths to gets its FM translator into a nearby major market. It's W293BK, which rebroadcasts WTLS in Tallassee (not to be confused with Tallahassee, FL). Most translators are placed on or near the AM tower(s) of the outlet they're rebroadcasting, or with a runt antenna on a building or hill. The operators of W293BK built a 400-foot tower on a hill to send out 250 watts directional to the WSW. There's another translator on 106.5 not far away in Auburn; they have mutually protecting DA's. What would happen if a broadcaster wanted to put a full-power FM on 106.3, 106.5 or 106.7 not far away? Wouldn't W293BK have to shut down? Translators have had this experience recently in several markets.
