The Capital Times :: FRONT :: 1A

By Anita Weier The Capital Times

Vicki McKenna -- "a voice of reason in a city of chaos" -- really likes that city, which is, of course, Madison.

McKenna, the host of "Upfront" on WIBA radio, says it's more fun doing her conservative talk show in a liberal town.

"I've always had this kind of appreciation for the underdog," she said in a leisurely interview last week. "I think it has a chance to have more impact because of the nature of Madison." ...

Drinks With ...Vicki McKenna

Who is she? WIBA-AM's afternoon talk radio host

Hangout of choice: Great Dane Brew Pub, Fitchburg (She can smoke there)

Her drink: Great Dane Oatmeal Stout (There was no Coors Light)

Last year was a good one for Vicki McKenna. It was her first full year being the host of her own, four-hour show, "Upfront with Vicki McKenna," on WIBA-AM 1310. (Previously she had been paired with a liberal partner.) McKenna was instrumental in the defeat of the Madison school funding referendums last spring. In recent debates, she's been a strident voice supporting concealed-carry gun legislation and opposing Madison's smoking ban.

Her outspoken conservative viewpoints are decidedly in the minority in Madison. She enters the Great Dane and lights a cigarette, knowing she's going to have to explain how a brash Republican woman ended up on top of local talk radio after being fired from her first radio job in this market. ...

You Go Girl!
I loved your story. As a fellow conservative and married to a Madisonian, I know what you deal with. Fortunately, I'm in southeastern Wisconsin surrounded by quite a few conservatives and family here. Not in Madison, that's for sure. Congrats for your success.

It is funny the article did not mention the night Vicki enjoyed herself too much after a U2 show in Madison.Et Tu,Vicki

I'd be much more impressed if I thought that one way or another, McKenna's opinions were really her own and not just the "correct" talk radio opinions.
