Outboard Gate/Expander

In need of a good downward expander to clamp out room noise. Sidechaining with a Manley Voxbox. The downward expander in the 528E is good...any other solid recommendations???

Thanks much!

I really like the expander in the Samson S-Com compressor.
Yeah, it's a cheap compressor, $100, but the expander works great for room noise.
Can't hear it work at all, and has fast and slow settings.
I use it with very light compression.

Much better than my 528 and DBX286A.

I decided to dump the idea of using another box for gate...

I'm just going True P-2, to Empirical Labs Distressor, to ProTools

And then using the Exp / Gate Dyn III plugin.

It works like a champ. Very clean, and transparent.

It's got a nice look-ahead feature too...I'm trying to figure out how to use it for doing live sessions via Source Connect or ISDN...but once I get that figured out, I'll be happy.

But alas, I'm running Adobe Audition...sadly the Dyn3 isn't an option :(

Mike, you did use the 528E for downward expansion, no? Does the Dyn3 plug really make a big difference, comparatively?

Thanks!

Hey!

I did use the 528E previously for the Expander as my gate.

However, I finally came to the realization, that there really wasn't THAT much room-noise to be dealing with ahead of time...

So, I just do it in the software now.

Basically, they do the same thing, only one does it on the bounce, one does it on the way in.

If I were doing more with ISDN or live sessions in the home studio, I'd be more concerned.

HOWEVER...as I was saying before, I think I'm about to figure out a way to use the DYN plugin for a live session.

Theoretically, it should just be a matter of routing...but I'm going to have to bust out the old Mackie to do it.

I'll keep you guys posted.

At the moment, when using Source Connect, I can't monitor myself, because in "Low Latency Monitoring" mode in Pro Tools, it automatically puts all my plugins in bypass...so I can hear myself, but can't hear direction from the client.

If I go into regular monitor mode, I hear the client, but not myself.

So, i have to re-organize the outputs to route headphone mixes to certain outputs, and then I'll be able to hear.

THEN...I'll see about using the gate on the way out, live.

I think it should work.
