Outlaw Country

The recent discussion of Shooter and Hank III (who I also love) prompted me to ask...I run an Outlaw feature on Saturdays. 6 Outlaw songs in a row. Everyone knows who the original outlaws are; I've got that covered. I've put in some Steve Earle, Hank Jr, Guy Clark to get the mid-outlaw sound...I've played Shooter, Hank III, Toby Keith, Eric Church, Jarrod Birmingham, Ray Scott, Danny Green for the "modern outlaw" sound.I would like to know if there is anyone I SHOULD be listening to; something that I can use for this feature. It definitely has to have an edge to it....and be country enough that I can put on the air.Feel free to email me about this if you'd like,[email protected]

You must play Billy Joe Shaver. Pat Green album songs, Mojo Nixon, Jerry Jeff Walker, one of the leaders of the modern movement Robbie Faulks, Waco Brothers, Charlie Robinson.Just to name a few.

Dunno but I don't consider Toby Keith an outlaw.... I just call him what he is, playing to the redneck crowd...To me outlaw has been music that doesn't sound like today's country..more rocking than normal.I like singers/groups like Cross Canadian ragweed (who has had some play on CMT and top 40 country), Jack Ingram,Cory Morrow, and most of the texas/red dirt scene musiciansPat Green is a good canidate, but I agree with the other poster that the albumn or less aired hits by him espcially of late is real good for outlaw.... He even has a brand new song "Feels like it should" kind of remeinds me of Jack Ingram/Bon jovi's country hit... type of sound..don't know why but when I heard it that's what I thought.Another of the classic outlaws should be Kentucky Headhunters ... Songs like "Dumas Walker","The Ballad of Davy Crockett","Only Daddy That'll Walk The Line","Walk Softly On This Heart Of Mine ", and "Oh Lonesome Me" were aired in 1989 and early 90's on top 40 country radio and still are performing but could be considered fringe today IMO not for air but a mention on air..Original outlaw David Allen Coe teamed up with the heavy metal group DamagePlan calling themselves Rebel meets Rebel... talk about extreme country :) RMR and the newer (after 1993 or so) Kentucky Headhunters play more to a rock crowd than country now howeverHope this helpsRFLA
