Great FM DX Tuesday evening (10/4) with fine trop conditions here in the Hudson Valley, bringing in three new loggings.

WCOD-106.1 Hyannis, MA “106-C.O.D.” in pretty well at 8:11pm, with semi-local WPDA interference during fades. I’ve been trying for this one all summer, and usually can’t get past WPDA/WBLI-106.1 and local 106.3 translator. Mass #40. 191 miles.

Next was CFRQ-104.3 Dartmouth (Halifax), NS, decent signal for a while with plenty of Nova Scotia spots/PSA’s with “Q-104” ID at 8:55pm, launching into a “Two fer Tuesday” “Free Ride”. Nova Scotia #3. 551 miles.

Then I had classical music on 102.7, must have just missed 9pm ID, they played non-stop classical, and finally at 10:00pm there was a brief announcement about a CBC labor dispute curtailing normal programming. Back to non-stop classical music which came in really well after 10pm. No actual ID, but CBC mention in English given the FM Trop conditions, would indicate this must be CBH-102.7 Halifax. Nova Scotia #4. 551 miles.

Later around midnight I noted previously logged Halifax-96.5 IDing as “Cool 96 dot 5” coming in really well, with WTIC interference during fades. Last year they were “Classic Hits FM - 96.5”.

Many other previously-heards were noted Tuesday evening, with stations ranging from Maine (WCLZ-98.9 with music of Peru on World Music Hour) to Buffalo (WTSS- Star-102.5) really blasting in, and also WPIG-95.7 from Olean in Western New York. Boston, Cape Cod and Binghamton were particularly strong.

With the continuance of unseasonably warm weather here in the Hudson Valley, perhaps there’ll be more nice DX tonight. Good DX to all!
______________

I'm not sure how far this one is, but I was just playing around with my amped antenna (a t-shaped wire fm antenna, closed in my 3rd story window, pointing south, run thorugh a tv antenna amp), touching the center conductor of the line out from the amp to the screw holding the antenna in place on my Grundig FR-200.

When I hit about 106/107 (this method of antenna-ing was very inaccurate in terms of the meter on the radio), I started heard some country music, and then a dj start talking about 92-5 XTU. If that's WXTU philly coming in on some intermod, then, I think that's my new longest FM DX record.

(Philly -> Blacksburg, VA, my other longest one was Myrtle Beach, SC to High Point, NC, or the sound from WECT-TV Wilmington, NC -> Greensboro, NC)

Does anyone have that air-miles calculator link handy?

I'd like to explore the bands a bit more, but this pre-lab on MOSFETs isn't going to do itself :p

Canada FM on Wednesday night

A rare Eastern Ontario opening Wednesday night.

One new logging: CJOJ-95.5 Belleville, ON at 6:40pm, with a number of spots mentioning Belleville and/or Trenton, mention of web site and Wall of Sound promotion, and weather with Canadian temperatures. Decent signal over WPLJ/WYJB, Ontario #7, 248 miles.

Also noted all evening:
CBOX-102.5 Ottawa in French with eclectic music, good steady signal, on one of my most-open frequencies.

CIMF-94.9 Gatineau,QU, "Rock Detente" in French. This is my one and only Quebec logging here in Poughkeepsie. They had a nice very listenable signal too.

These faded out between 11:30 and midnight. No other Eastern Ontario signals made it through. Signals from the Ottawa area have to cross the heart of the Adirondack Mountains, and part of the Catskills. I'm lucky to hear this area once a year.
______________
