Over/Under: How Soon Until CNN Cancels "Piers Morgan Tonight"?

Not a very good day for CNN. On the day they announce that one half of their 8 PM program is leaving, the cable news ratings for Thursday were released. And in the 25-54 demographic, "Piers Morgan Tonight" trailed, among others, the aforementioned 8 PM program on CNN that is being broken up and retooled.

In fact, Morgan's show had the smallest 25-54 demo viewership on the network in prime time, and as Mediaite points out, "being outperformed by far lower profile shows like John King USA, which has significantly less promotion behind it, is telling."

By comparison, only Nancy Grace on HLN outperformed Morgan's show, and all programs on MSNBC in prime time beat Morgan in 25-54.

If they wanted to do the Charlie Rose Show, they could have hired him for a lot less money than they're paying Piers.

The fact is that this is a stuffy BBC show that even the BBC would cancel. They're heading in the wrong direction. The public doesn't want serious one-on-one interviews. They want "gotcha" journalism, and Bad Person of the Week. Entertain! Build a fan base! Get people motivated! Start a book club. Well, only if you're Oprah. We need to see the Mean Peirs that we saw on Celebrity Apprentice. He has it in him. If he stays in this dull boring box, he'll be gone by the summer.

I don't thinkt the public would mind serious one on one interviews if they were done correctly. By this I am thinking of Bob Costas, who seemed to have a good humour when necessary and seriousness when needed.

Anyone privy to Piers contract? Is it a non-compete?

Odds of Larry making a grand return? Probably not high.

Odds of a new 8pm show with Spitzer and others going two hours? Better, imo.

Because CNN would rather concentrate on "hard news" - even if it has to be opinionated coverage of "hard news".

CNN should just go full speed ahead with an 8-10pm Spitzer program.
They could have 2-4 topics to cover instead of just 1-2 with the new "in the arena" format.

How would that lead to an improvement? Other than putting Piers out to pasture.

CNN certainly has a quandary from 8-10pm Eastern. Anderson does OK at 10. Maybe the answer is to move Anderson up and Spitzer back. Kind of like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic, to quote the overused phrase. One bright spot for CNN, the end of Olbermann at MSNBC doesn't hurt.

That puts Anderson up against Bill O'Reilly, which is sort of a losing proposition. Anyone in that slot will lose until Bill either explodes or someone else comes up with something better. It's like going up against Ed Sullivan in the 60s. You just assume you're going to lose that hour. Hannity is another ratings machine that's hard to beat, combining radio and TV.
