Overheard in a State College bar

So there I was, sipping an adult beverage at one of SC's many watering holes when some folks sit down next to me and start yakking about radio. It quickly becomes evident that they're WGMR employees and they're all excited about an impending change from "Revolution" to "G-101.1" and they lay out the presumed refinements to the format. They don't know me, so I just keep sipping and listening. I want to tell 'em that this ain't the right place for such a conversation. I want to tell 'em that they could be unwittingly spilling the beans to a competitor. I want to ask 'em why they're not--at least--waiting 4 weeks for the spring book to see how their LAST adjustments worked before making more changes. But they were oblivious. And I just ordered another beer and chuckled to think how small this town really is.

Yes there are a few changes coming to the station...Nothing that is very drastic. We are just tweaking a few things. No format change, No owenrship change. Sales staff hit streets with it last week. Not Top Secret. Full Change takes effect on Friday...and as always mountaineer you make great points on the board and we value the input of a radio vet. Let us know what you think on Friday.

Funny, I overheard a couple of people talking in a small town restaurant. The gist of the conversation was that WGMR was changing to music of your life and using the name "Great Music Radio".

I was at the Hookies last night and I heard that Shotgun Mark Curtis may return to GMR for the morning slot. With a definite shot at a national syndication launch soon thereafter.
Charley HooHoo in the mid-afternoons?

According to rumor, the new WGMR lineup is -

Mornings - Shotgun Mark Curtis
Midday - Radio Rich
Afternoons - Marty Nettles
Nights - Scott Finkle
Overnights/station janitor - T.C. Webster

Well I listened to WGMR last saturday....I think the station sounds tight and bright........good liner voice and maybe a couple of shotgun jingles to break up the elements would help...I always thought that the call sign WGMR was easy to remember and heritage..why bury it? Like WOWY spells welll u know.....good luck with your changes......its good to see a group of dedicated broadcasters make a good game of it in the market.......

Here's to Friday!

Really, I do hope the adjustments are mostly window dressing; y'all have made so much progress this last year, it would be a shame to see the station veer off in another direction--especially when it appears as though GMR will have its best book in about a decade. For what it's worth, my 24-year old was home this week and brought friends from the same demo, and they kept it glued to 101.1--personal evidence that what you're doing now may be on-target as a CHR. Nothing against the good people over at the Evil Empire, but a lot of us are hoping you kick their ass.
