Overhype

Ok, the temperature dropped, but so what? After watching Cecily Tinan last night you would think we were midway through the tribulation.

Of course Action News will over hype, that is what they do with their joke of a newscast. Why anyone watches is anyone's guess

Oh, now, now...that's NOwhere near the "it's-the-storm-of-the-century-a'comin'-and-we're-all-going-to-die" mantra of John Bolaris in 2001.

Now, THAT took some cojones for him to miss THAT one by so far and still show his mug on TeeVee the next day. :)

Oh man, I tried to repress that memory.

In an over-the-top, overhyped business, that put everything else to shame, even the idea of naming winter storms.

I don't know. Why do you watch Action News?

I have a theory about WPVI

I have a theory....

The music, "Move Closer To Your World"...it hypnotizes people! That's why WPVI is still #1. Not to mention the anchors are sending out subliminal messages telling people that WPVI is the one and only truth...that they should watch only Action News 6...Ooooooooo...

Meh, just kidding. But it's worth a thought to your questions.

Actually it may have some truth to it.

For the comedy value.
It is rather funny.
I do not watch it for news.

Philly News Comment/Question

Don't Philadelphia's local TV newscasts have a national reputation for over-hyping winter storms??

I wonder how long it will be until KYW-3, WPVI-6, WCAU-10 and WTXF-29 start playing R.E.M.'s hit song "It's The End Of The World As We Know It" in the background when they broadcast alarming reports of snow.

To me, that would be hilarious, but the idea might be to scare viewers that The End Is Near.

My understanding is that John Bolaris, now of WCBS, was run out of town after hyping a major blizzard that never happened. You can have him back, along with Dave Price. From my limited viewing of the stations down there, they seem to have weather overkill. In fact it was the first time I have seen "Breaking Weather" - something which lead me to wonder WTF they think is actual news.

Every one of them in town is guilty of the OHWSS--over hyping winter storms syndrome. WCAU happens to have had the most advanced case ever seen when Bolaris was in town, but it's an epidemic for sure.

Let the first flakes fly, and all of the other news goes out the window. I think they install a permanent camera in the bread aisle at the Bala Cynwyd Acme to prove that Philadelphians have a French Toast fetish, stocking up on bread, milk and eggs as if the city would be locked in an ice age for eons.

Paying a little extra attention to the traffic reports and weather is fine, but blowing out regular programming just so they can rotate from reporter to reporter in the exact same locations every single storm is silly.

Re: Philly News Comment/Question

I can sort of see buying bread, eggs and milk for every snow storm. Even road salt. But why snow shovels? Don't snow shovels last. Or do these idiots think since this was "the storm of the century," it won't snow again for 100 years and pitch the shovels after each snowfall.

The most disgusting part are the prime time teases: "Are we due for another big snow storm this weekend?" (At 11:25 pm, it turns out we are not.)

CBS3 and Fox29 are really at a competitive disadvantage for storm-supermarket coverage in Center City. Not to mention, you there you got to pay Street's wage tax.

As for Bolaris: People who get "run out of town" don't go to larger markets. Unless you mean JB was run out of town by some jealous husband or boyfriend.
Former squeeze Jane Disrobealot is now in Orlando, where they squeeze oranges.

FIRST SNOW

Funny timing for this thread, on WPVI this morning the new weather guy predicted possible flurries for Black Friday. "Stormtracker 6", "Doppler 10 billion" and whatever 3 and Fox call their multi-million dollar weather systems, they ALL seem to have trouble getting TOMORROW's forcast right, let alone next Friday's!!!

The "Ghost In The Machine" seems to be the pasty face of John Bolaris grinning back at us from our 42" plasma-screened boob-tubes: "The storm of the century is upon us! Prepare for anihilation!"

You...have...been...warned! :)

Re: FIRST SNOW-JOB

Too bad I'm not a writer for "Saturday Night Live".

I probably could have taken all these comments about Phuiladelphia's TV stations over-hyping snow storms, and written a very funny skit about a fictional Philadelphia TV weatherman named "John Lavoris" (you know who he's patterened after!), who at the sign of a few flurries, predicts The End Of The World As We Know It!

I've told this story on these boards before but it fits in here so I'll tell it again...

Years ago, I stood in front of the television and watched Dave Roberts tell everyone that we have the possibility for a foot or more of snow in ten days. I actually cursed at the TV. 'How,' I wondered, 'can he possibly try to forecast snow for ten days out?'

Ten days later was the beginning of 1996 "The Blizzard of the Century."

Well he seems to know how to deliver his lines well, as he is not a meteorologist just some guy who reads the weather report.

I think I heard somewhere that KYW's Tom Lamaine start out just as a guy who did the weather and went and got a degree in meteorology? If so that is much better than faking it.

Re: FIRST SNOW-JOB

Joe...

I always wondered if Bolaris left Philly in part because he became a running joke and the butt of much humor. I suspect that he lost lots of credibility over that "we're-all-going-to-die" snow-cast.

Why does it matter if they fake it? Meteorologist still do the weather for Ch6, so who cares who reads the info? I would agree if it was Dave Roberts who tried to figure out the forcasts.

Re: FIRST SNOW

Ch6 often gets knocked for not havning their weather inhouse. However because of this I think they're the most accurate (atleast with Snowfall amounts). All the channels have to hype big storms the best they can. With 3 and 10,. I think this causes a bias when trying to predict snowfall amounts. They want it to be a big storm, so they favor factors that support this. 6 on the other hand gets there weather from accu-weather. Accu-weather has no bias in wanting a storm big or small, thus Ch 6 can only hype what they get.

A good example of this was just last year, when we got our 2nd biggest snowfall for the year. The night before Ch 6 said around 6-7inches of snow would fall, ch 3 said 10-12inches of snow would fall, and ch 10 went nuts with this so called 14 out 15 signs of a major storm (which I think he said happened before the 1996 blizzard), and said we would get 14-17 inches of snow. Who was right? Well the next day 2 of the 3 stations changed there forcast to what ch 6 said, and Glen "hurricane" Schwartz had egg on his face the entire day.

Anyway, its obvious that Glen Schwartz based his predictions on his so-called 14 out of 15 signs. He saw this and said wow, we might have a major storm coming. And because he wants that, he took this info more serious, while the people at accu-weather probably didn't.
