Well put. The degree alone is not the be-all and end-all. I said the same about Herb Clarke on WCAU. Having a gazillion eggheads on staff hasn't made the forecast all that much better than in Herb's prime.

All running jokes about the storm-of-the-century-that-never-happened, not to mention his supposed romantic conquests, aside, I'm inclined to give the benefit of the doubt that going back to New York was a great opportunity and that he--for whatever reasons that mattered to him--opted to take. Heaven knows the gossip is more fun, but sometimes it's nothing more than a lifestyle choice.

Amen. Some people are just bitter at the thought of others' success.

So you think good presentation is more important than technical competence?

Re: FIRST SNOW-JOB

Wasn't Bolaris from New York anyway? Perhaps he wanted to return?

It's not necessarily an either-or situation. Specialized reporters know their beats well, but they don't necessarily have to have a degree in it. People like Cherie Bank and Anita Brikman are excellent health reporters, but they don't have to be doctors to do it. A consumer reporter doesn't need a doctorate in economics. Sports reporters don't have to have played in one of the major leagues. A religion reporter doesn't need to have been a member of the clergy.

Weather is for the most part a specialized beat. It's simply not accurate to suggest someone can't be well versed in the weather unless they have the meteorologist title in front of their name, or to use your wording that they're not technically competent. It's all well and good if you do have it, and as someone who always struggled with sciences, I say, sincerely, that it's an accomplishment to be proud of, but it doesn't diminsh others.

Yup--WCBS before he came to WCAU.

He is actually from Long Island. When Doppler 2 Million made its debut he highlighted his childhood home out on the Island. Since he is from the Island, it explains volumes.<P ID="signature">______________

Re: FIRST SNOW

Does Jim Gardner go out, and personally file each report? Guys like Dave Roberts present the already prepared forecasts. Limited knowledge in weather is needed for this. Kathy Orr and Glen Schwartz all have there little weather teams too that do most of the work. Just because they have some personal involment in it before they present it on air, doesn't make it any better then the team of meteorologists in state college who send info to ch6.
