overload

I'd get various FM stations on the scanner, well out of their assigned frequency, but the most curious overload issues I've had...were on the phone.

A few years ago, before I joined my wife in our move to Halifax NS, we'd do the daily phone calls. I noticed distinct radio programming, underneath our conversations, while I was on the phone (land line) with my wife. She couldn't hear it from her end and it was only during these long distance calls to her in Halifax, when I'd be hearing the programming. I then figured out, where the source of the programming was coming from. The RCI facility in Sackville NB. How on earth, was the programming from Sackville, ending up through my phone line? I have no idea. Any educated guesses? :)

Were you using a cordless phone? How far from Sackville were you?

Theory... you were using a cordless phone. Sackville was transmitting on the 9.5 and/or 11.7MHz shortwave bands. You were in the "skip area", somewhere between a few hundred and maybe 3,000km from Sackville, so the shortwave signals were REALLY STRONG at your location.

The RCI shortwave signals were being picked up on your phoneline (which makes a really good antenna!) and getting through to the intermediate-frequency amplifier in your phone. That amp was probably on or near 10.7MHz and doesn't have much selectivity, so it would amplify and demodulate the RCI signals.

Your wife wasn't hearing it because Halifax is way too close to Sackville - the RCI signal was a lot weaker at her end. And probably the intermediate-frequency amplifier in your phone's base station was on a different frequency (maybe 455KHz?) such that it didn't pick up RCI. And maybe she wasn't using a cordless phone.

That's just a wild guess. When I was 10 years old (that's over 40 years ago...) the clock radio in my room would pick up shortwave stations on the 10.7MHz FM intermediate-frequency amplifier. I clearly remember being able to set the clock accurately because it would pick up WWV!

Unfortunately, even if you move back from Halifax you won't have this problem anymore. Sackville is not only off the air but, from what I hear, dismantled.

bobdavcav, I don't live that far from the Yakima sticks. Maybe 8 miles as well. 93.5 is all but lost due to K229AD, and bleed from KDBL/KDNA/KATS. Sometimes, KATS bleeds up to 96.1 (taking out KLKY!) And KXLE is never heard here for some reason (the Umtanum Ridge?) 95.3 is always KATS bleed. But down in Wapato, KXLE is like a local. Weird...
