Oversatuation?

I've followed the Toronto market closely for a few years now, and listen to it on a regular basis. I've noticed several stations having the same virtual format (ya know, 92.5, 93.5, 99.9, 103.5, and 104.5). CHUM obviously won't give their format up, but doesn't anyone think these 5 stations are overkill? What format could one of these stations flip to to lessen competition and target something else?

Almost every urban market seems to have the over saturation issue. However, Toronto does have two stations which matter (besides a smattering of interesting ethnic stations), because they indeed offer different formats than anything else on the dial. CJRT (JAZZ91) and CFMX/CFMZ (Classical 96.3/103.1). IMHO, everything else just gets lost in the clutter.

Here's a curve ball. Catch this one! CRTC just allowed Bell to buy Astral Media.
As a result of that, Bell MUST sell Flow and Boom.
Perhaps Bell will deliberately sell to a company that promises to be the LEAST threat to CHUM FM and Virgin radio...

As strictly an example, with no fact intended, wouldn't it be something if Flow and Boom were sold to Durham radio inc?
Flow would most likely go Country in that case.
Not sure what Boom would become though...

All we can really do is wait and see who actually ends up owning Toronto's Boom and Flow.
It will be interesting to see what the new owner(s) decide to do with those stations...

That question has been on my mind since that first proposal. Can Newcap survive in a market like Toronto?
If NewCap can handle Ottawa, (and other places) I'm sure they can handle Toronto.
??? I don't understand where they'll get their morning and afternoon drive news from though.
It sure won't be news from the CFRB News room anymore... (for Boom) or CHUM news on Flow anymore...

over saturation..??
ot the top 40 spund with different variance ..

say CIDC and Virgin, are "close" but
z103 will play waybacks, and is more
persona driven ... versus 99.9 and
" the angry kids" remix will ONLY have
a 12 minute CURRENT mix... and kiss92 that has
a CURRENT mix on Friday AM will have more
older samples of dance/party hit radio
BUT wont play the actual song from
2005 whereas Z103 will do so...

and now CHUM is doing throw back thursdays
where z103 wont touch the full length songs,
just mix in the chorus under a dance beat of course...

Sorry, I'm kinda lost with what you're saying. Did you mention one time that you're typing this from an iPad? (I'm not insulting you, I just can't really make out what you're saying)

Granted, all of those stations have different leans to them to target a niche audience. I'm just saying this as a listener first and foremost. The market has 3 Top 40s, a Rhythmic, a Hot AC/Adult Top 40, and dozens of outlying stations in and around the GTA. I'm just surprised one of those stations hasn't flipped yet. Of course, with CanCon, there are severe limits to what you can do.

I don't think I understand what you mean. There are tons of possible formats.
It's more like the big guys are not willing to take a risk. They'd rather play it safe
with the formats they have than to try something new.

We really should wait and see who ends up owning Boom and Flow before concluding that no one wants to flip.
I wonder how fast Rogers would be to flip Kiss 92 back to Country if Durham Radio inc buys any or both of those two stations.
Way to screw them over! :D

I say with the CanCon thing because there seems to be limits to what you can air. For example, the Rhythmic Oldies format on CKDX didn't last for very long, partially because there wasn't enough CanCon to supply it.

Haha! I doubt Kiss is going back to Country. Kiss and Virgin are neck and neck. Plus, there doesn't seem to be a huge market for it, at least in the city.

I meant each top40 station...
while still staying in their format
seem to have their own distinct
personalities...stay within their rules..

ie. kiss 92 doesn't do much, if any
rewind/ while z103 will do the hit mix
at 5pm and throw in some 90s waybacks...
(during the currrent mix)

and, On the topic of throwbacks, CHUM
now does an all "retro" evening programming
but it is a'throwback' thursday ..and it is a
RADIO presentation to it..not a non stop mix...
