Owensboro GM Gig

Cromwell is advertising for a Market Manager for their Owensboro cluster. I've met Bud a few times at radio meetings but don't know what he's like to work for. Any clues?

My impression has always been that between the big Evansville Class C FMs and the TV stations there might not be much billing left in Owensboro for Cromwell's bunch of small sticks.

Is that a wrong impression?

What he said.

Bud isn't a bad person. But then again, I've been front row and center when one of his get rich quick schemes implodes and he allows employees to be squashed under the bus. Bud is more concerned about impressing his peeps at the NAB, RAB, KBA and other similar associations. If it is the difference between a needed piece of equipment verses a new toy (example HD transmitter), the toy will win so Bud can brag to his buddies about being on the cutting edge of technology.

As far as revenue, there used to be money in Owensboro back in the day. But that was when the BTA rate among the signals was double digits per spot. Cromwell sells inventory for single digits per spot (sometimes less than a dollar) and spreads that across seven signals.

I always heard very good things about their former manager Dale Powers. Bud's history of cluster managers for Owensboro/Tell City has been a roller coaster ride. For every Dale Powers and Paul B. Daniel there has been a Bob Munson or a Terry Taylor that has destroyed everything, caused a staff exodus as well as legal problems. Let's hope Bud chooses his next manager wisely and not one who promises the world on a bounced check.

You're being far too charitable.

You are correct in saying that his "fellow owners" are the ones who matter. They have his respect. He likes rubbing elbows with them although I suspect it bothers him to the bone that he isn't taken more seriously in those circles.

Other than "the chosen few", the man has zero (sometimes less) respect for his own people. They are of no value to him and they come a dime a dozen (I've heard him say it). Frequently, deals border on the grey area...if not well into it. He has a history of hiring somewhat unscrupulous managers who tend to run roughshod over everyone else as if they're entitled. Frequently it happens right under his nose, so one would assume that the shady practices have his approval. Either that, or he really is as inept as he appears.

His operations leave me with the impression that they are perhaps the most under-performing signals you'll ever see. The potential is there...the ownership is out to lunch.

Proceed with extreme caution...if you proceed.

Once upon a time his favorite expression was "the numbers tell the story". Sounds like he was right.

And his ad includes this weird stipulation: "...if you have a reason to be in the S. IN/W.KY area..." What does that mean? The job isn't enough of a reason to be there? He won't pay relocation expenses? You have to have relatives in the area?

And as BF said above, he has made some dandy hires. If I'm not mistaken, years ago one of his managers stole from him, so Bud fired him....then hired the guys wife as his replacement.

Actually, my favorite Bud speak is "Serving the community!" If he is speaking at a civic function you could get drunk fast if you take a shot every time he says that. His motivational line to employees in lieu of a raise or overtime, "Remember, you're helping people!"

All those years of better living through chemistry and it took RadioRob to give me my first flashback. I feel somehow deprived.

I'd still like to know why you need "a reason" to live there before applying for the job.

They ever hire anybody for this gig?

Yes they did, and the winner is Lee Wilson. Lee was sales manager in the building that was formerly WVJS and WSTO. He was sales manager for WVJS/WSTO, stayed with Century Cable when radio left and held on through Adelphia and then Insight Media. It was former Cromwell/WVJS-WSTO GM Corky Norcia that made Lee SM back in the nineties so technically Lee is Corky boss, at least on paper.
