P-I Article Profiles Local Radio

Seattle radio historian Feliks Banel, who currently works behind the scenes at KUOW, has written a detailed article for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer, spotlighting all of Seattle's local radio hosts, from John Carlson on KOMO and KVI, to Ron and Don on KIRO.

There is more live and local talkradio in Seattle in one day than there is in NYC in an entire week! I've listened to KIRO-FM online and find it more entertaining and informative than any of NY's three talk stations. When I log on to KIRO-FM, they're talking about Seattle! If a Seattleite logs on to WABC, WOR or WNYM that listener isn't likely to hear much about New York! None of them sound like a New York radio station. They might as well be free satellite stations!

WABC, Citadel's flagship, is 100% syndie Mon-Fri. There are a couple of local shows on weekends. WOR, owned by Buckley, is all syndie except for John Gambling in AM Drive and Joan Hamburg's midday show. WNYM, owned by Salem, is also all syndie except for Curtis Sliwa in AM Drive.

Bonneville, which owns KIRO-FM, once owned 105.1 in NYC, first as easy listening WRFM, which morphed to AC Soft Rock 105, than to Hot AC Mix 105 before they sold the station in the late 90s. It is now urban Power 105.1, owned by CC. Perhaps if Bonneville kept the station, it might be a talk station today. IMHO, a talk station like KIRO-FM in NYC would easily beat WABC, WOR and WNYM.

Talkradio in New York, the #1 market, can't hold a match to Seattle! It may not be forever, but enjoy it while you have it! :)
